According to the report, the global smartphone market revenue exceeded $448 billion in 2021, up 7% year-on-year and 20% month-on-month. The average selling price (ASP) of a smartphone increased 12% year-over-year to $322. And that's largely due to the higher share of 5G smartphones and the success of Apple's iPhone 13 series devices.
At the same time, as manufacturers such as Xiaomi, Vivo, OPPO and Realme focus on meeting the greater demand for affordable 5G smartphones in emerging markets, more 5G-enabled models were released this year.
Based on this, 5G-enabled smartphones will account for more than 40% of global smartphone shipments in 2021. In contrast, in 2020, the proportion is 18%.
Related analysis shows that due to online teaching, work, entertainment and other activities, more users want to upgrade their devices to get a better overall experience, and the global demand for mid-range and high-end smartphones has also increased. The global shortage of smartphone parts has also led major manufacturers to increase the retail price of some entry-level and mid-range smartphones.
In addition to the overall market changes, the report also analyzes the specific share of revenue in the smartphone market.
According to the information mentioned in the report, Apple's 2021 iPhone revenue increased by 35% year-on-year to $196 billion, accounting for 44% of the world's total smartphone revenue.
This was largely due to good sales of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 series, which helped Apple achieve an overall ASP growth of 14%. And in major emerging markets Apple has also gained share growth.
In terms of overall market performance, Apple alone accounts for 44% of the world's total smartphone revenue, which makes it a major position in the global smartphone market.
Compared with previous years, Apple's smartphone revenue in 2020 accounted for more than 38% of the global market; earlier in 2018 and 2017 also reached 38%; 2019 was relatively low, around 35%.
Combined with these data, Apple's shipment performance in the past year has been quite good, which has also led to a larger increase in its revenue share.
After Apple, Samsung occupies the second position of the share. Samsung's smartphone revenue grew 11% year-over-year to $72 billion in 2021. This is mainly due to its successful increase in global market share in the mid-to-high-end market.
At the same time, Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold3 5G and Z Flip3 folding screen series have also attracted the attention of a considerable number of users.
OPPO revenue increased 47% year-over-year, driven by strong demand from OPPO's Reno 6 series, Find X3 series and OnePlus 9 series. OPPO's 5G mobile phone shipments in 2021 account for more than 50% of the brand's annual shipments.
Xiaomi grew 49% year-over-year to $36 billion. This is mainly due to the increase in shipments and market share of Xiaomi's mid-to-high-end smartphones.
Vivo ranked fifth in both revenue and shipments, with revenue up 43% year-over-year. Correlation analysis shows that this is driven by Vivo's X series, S series, and broad product portfolio across the full price segment.
Combined with the overall share ratio, Apple still occupies a considerable degree of advantage. Other manufacturers also have different growth rates, and the subsequent smartphone market pattern is also expected.
