In 2014, Crimea held a referendum to declare its secession from Ukraine and join Russia, followed by a referendum in the two eastern ukrainian states to declare the establishment of a republic, and Ukraine fell into a state of disintegration for a time.
Ukraine has always wanted to join NATO, and Russia will never allow NATO to expand to its doorstep.
Ukraine is therefore in a really precarious situation.
