Ji Wang Xi's Trip Book Lin Zexu's "Ten Unhelpful Aphorisms".

Lin Zexu's appointment in Jiangsu was inextricably linked to Buddhism. In 1839, in response to the shortcomings of the world, he wrote the "Ten Useless Aphorisms", full of Zen machines.

Lin Zexu's Ten Aphorisms

1. Parents are not filial piety, and it is useless to serve God

2, bad intentions, feng shui is not beneficial

3, brothers are not harmonious, making friends is not beneficial

4, misconduct, reading is useless

5, do things well, smart is not beneficial

6. Arrogant and erudite

7, bad luck, vainly seeking is useless

8. Taking people's wealth in vain is useless

9, do not hesitate to be energetic, medicine is useless

10. Fornication and wanton lust, and insincerity is useless

First, parents are not filial piety, and it is useless to worship God

There are three greatest kinds of "love" in life.

One is the love of relatives, one is the love of lovers, and the other is the love of friends. In short, family, love, friendship. Family affection is warm, love is lingering, and friendship is sincere. Which is the most selfless? Nothing is more than the love of relatives: the love of parents! The love of parents is higher than the mountains and deeper than the sea, and it is difficult to repay in three lifetimes! Filial piety comes first. No matter how great a person has achieved, how many halos you wear on your head, if you are not filial to your parents, all honors will be eclipsed.

"It is useless to serve God", if you are not filial to your parents, no matter how devout and admiring you are to God, everything is false. Confucius Ziyun: Filial piety is also the essence of man! Youyun: Worship ghosts and gods and stay away.

The holiness of the parents is beyond the reach of the gods. If you want to worship God, why give up the near and seek the far!

Second, the intention is not good, feng shui is useless

"University" has a saying: "The way of the university is in Mingmingde, in the people, and in the ultimate good." "If you have a bad heart and go against the heavens, you will undoubtedly kill yourself." Feng Shui is useless", that is, if people are not good and do more unrighteous deeds, they will not only shame their ancestors, but also harm their descendants.

Confucianism equates "man" with "benevolence", and human beings are benevolent. What about the benevolent? Zenya! Heaven and earth are righteous, and people's hearts are benevolent, which is the "law of universal gravitation" of the eternal operation of the universe and the growth of all things.

Third, brothers are not in harmony, and it is useless to make friends

The Book of Verses says, "All men of this day are like brothers." "In a family, parents are the foundation and brothers are the branches. Only when brothers and sisters support each other can the family business flourish. If a brother or sister cannot make peace with them, why should they make friends? Many people are polite and honest in their diplomatic friends; at home, it is difficult to associate with brothers and sisters, and even to speak ill of each other, which is really an inversion of the horse.

Fourth, misbehaving, reading is useless

Zi Yue: "The scholars of the past are the scholars of their own present." ”

It means that the ancients read for themselves, and the present people read for others. To read for the sake of others is to win the approval of others, and to behave shallowly and kitschily. And for their own study, it is to cultivate energy storage, internal cultivation of benevolence, and external cultivation of etiquette.

Simply put, reading is for self-cultivation. If you read the books of the sages, but only to show off yourself, it is useless to read.

Fifth, doing things well, clever is useless

Confucius Ziyun: "Disciples enter filial piety, out are respectful, cautious and benevolent, pan-loving, and students are determined to be literate."

"Behaving in a perverse manner" means that people are unreasonable, paranoid, and innovative everywhere. People who are willing to sensationalize and have bad intentions are often used by others to become tools of evil. The male lion can be ambushed by a million, and the national thief is a fearsome.

Sixth, the heart is arrogant, and the erudition is useless

"Full of losses, humble benefits." It is the way of a humble gentleman. What is the erudition of reading? Tonggu has been practicing all this time, and it is only self-cultivation. The more knowledgeable people are, the more humble they are. If we take erudition as the basis of boasting, and if we are proud and arrogant, aggressive, and invincible, and think that those who are not self-righteous, even if they read all the ancient and modern books of the world, know astronomy from above and geography from below, what good is it? Add a hated ear in vain!

Seventh, the times are not good, and it is useless to seek it

The poor are alone, and the poor are good at the same time.

"Poor" means bad luck. "Vain demand" means extravagance and wanton demand, and a gentleman should judge the situation and not do unnecessary acts.

The plot is in man, and the success is in heaven. The so-called times create heroes, and if people want to accomplish things, they must not only know what they can do, but also know what they can do. Doing one's duty and obeying the destiny of heaven is the way of a gentleman.

Eighth, it is useless to take advantage of others' wealth and to give alms

Zi Yue: "Unrighteous and rich and expensive, to me is like a floating cloud." "A gentleman loves money and has a way to get it." To take advantage of others' wealth is to be unjust. It is unjust to accept the work of being useless, to fill one's own pockets, and to take the sheep by the hand. Taking people's wealth in vain, taking it for charity, and borrowing flowers to offer Buddhas in the name of it is actually just hypocrisy. It is better to work hard with your own hands and give alms with kindness, so that you can feel at ease.

The goods and colors cannot be broken, and their people are not inferior. Cargo, money also. Money is an external object. Fighting righteousness and neglecting wealth is Haojie's behavior; loving wealth as fate is difficult to become a great instrument.

A gentleman is a righteous man, and a villain is a benefit. It is not far from seeking wealth and harming lives without merit, and taking advantage of people's wealth in vain.

Nine, do not hesitate to be energetic, medicine is useless

Mencius said, "I am good at nurturing my mighty qi." ”

Yuanqi is the inner state of spiritual richness and full of righteousness, and it is the root of life's hard work and positive progress. People who do not hesitate to be energetic are brave enough to think that their strength is infinite, but they are often severely injured by various external forces. After the yuan qi was seriously injured, he hoped that the elixir would cure the symptoms, but he could not cure the root cause; if he could cure it for a while, he could not cure it for a lifetime.

The skin of the body, the parents, should cherish it. Outside the body and inner qi, there is nothing more to nourish the body than to nourish the qi. If you are not confused by the reputation, then you are thick with the strength of the one who nourishes it; if you are not confused by the customs, then the one who controls its qi is heavy. How to nourish the gas? There is only desire.

A gentleman has nothing to eat and does not seek to be satisfied, and he does not seek peace in order to nourish the spirit of Haoran!

10. Adultery and wanton lust, and insincerity is useless

Do not do what is good and small, and do not do it with evil.

Yin dove, that is, the meaning of accumulating yin virtue, accumulating small goodness to form great merit, preventing small evil so as not to damage merit. If life is indulged in luxury and absurdity, although it is useless to repeatedly do good deeds and accumulate yin virtue. The master first reached himself, led by example, strictly disciplined himself, and started from hardship and simplicity.

Lin Zexu's "Ten Useless" warns the world: The law of cause and effect is the wake-up call of life, everything should not be reversed, everything should be done after thinking twice, accumulating virtue and doing good, in order to be consistent.
