Samsung S22+/Ultra mobile phone 45W fast charging speed and 25W is not much different

IT Home February 21 news, according to Gsmarena reported that Samsung Galaxy S22 series has finally brought an increase in charging speed. The two larger models in the new Galaxy S22 series claim to offer a wired charging speed of 45W, while the Samsung S22 Standard Edition retains the 25W charging speed of its predecessor.

Over the past few years, the industry has been developing rapidly in terms of charging speed. Users have bought a mid-range mobile phone with 65W charging from other mobile phone manufacturers, and flagship mobile phones of brands such as Xiaomi and Vivo have crossed the 100W threshold. But for Samsung, the 45W is at least an improvement, and it seems to be much faster than the 25W in numbers.

However, the test report shows that this is not the case, and Samsung's 45W effect may only exist in the marketing materials, and the 25W charging speed is not much different.

The Gsmarena review team tested the phones using three chargers — Samsung's original 45W and 25W chargers, and a third-party 65W PD charger — to achieve good results. Note that both Samsung chargers support both power transmission (PD) and programmable power supply (PPS) standards, while third-party solutions are only PD certified.

We can see that the Galaxy S22+ reaches 62% charge after 30 minutes with the 25W Samsung charger, compared to only 64% with the 45W charger. The Samsung S22 Ultra reaches 61% charge after 30 minutes with a 25W charger and 60% with a 45W charger. Third-party 65W PD chargers managed to fully charge the S22 Ultra's battery to 65% at the same time, and these results were all within the margin of error.

The Samsung S22+ uses a 45W charger, which takes 1:01 hours from 0% to full charging, and 1 minute more with a 25W charger. The Samsung S22 Ultra is fully charged from 0% with a 25W charger, which takes exactly 1:04 hours, and a full charge with the 45W charger is only 5 minutes less, or 59 minutes. A full charge with a 65W PD third-party charger takes 1:02 hours.

What does this mean? Samsung's 45W charge rate claims can be downright misleading, and even when paired with the original Samsung charger, there's no real real benefit in terms of charging time than the 25W solution.

To make matters worse, back in 2019, Samsung was exactly the same on the Galaxy Note10+. The company subsequently ditched 45W charging on the Note20 Ultra. After this practice was reinstated on S22+ and S22 Ultra, reports showed a repeat of the same practice.

There are two important implications for this. First of all, if charging speed is important to you, then the Galaxy S22 series will be as disappointing as the previous Samsung flagships. As has been the case for the past two years, you need 1 hour to fully charge.

Second, if you end up wanting to buy the Samsung S22+ and S22 Ultra, there's no need to spend $50 on a Samsung charger for 45W. A 25W charger can actually do the same for just $20.

At present, Samsung has not responded.
