As the only jewelry teacher in the core team of medal design, Liu Xiao and the team members looked for materials and designed ideas together in the early stage, and were mainly responsible for proofing and process supervision in the later stage. The medal, called "Concentricity", looks simple, but it is not simple.
Liu Xiao introduced that in 2020, when they learned of the global collection of medal design plans for the Beijing Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, they began to form a medal design team.
On the basis of continuing the concept of jade culture for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the design team sought inspiration from the essence of traditional culture, constantly innovated forms, and finally designed the medal of "five rings with one heart, one heart to the circle", whether it is the concave ring on the front and the pattern carved in the ring, or the emblem of the Winter Olympics on the back, the full name and the trajectory of the movement ring engraved with 24 stars, none of which is not vivid, none of which is not profound, and none of which does not show the world the breadth and depth of Chinese culture.
"Jewelry art design in the new era should be people-oriented, tailor-made for people's spiritual and emotional needs, and should give jewelry humanistic and emotional value." Speaking of outstanding alumni Liu Xiao, Fang Xinfei and Liu Xiwen, art teachers of Yueyang No. 1 Middle School, still remember him vividly. When Liu Xiao was admitted to the first middle school in the city, he was not a special student, but he was very interested in art, and he had a high level of understanding and was active in learning. After entering the third year of high school, Liu Xiao studied more seriously and worked harder. Liu Xiao, who is only 36 years old, is already the leading jewelry artist in China. He currently teaches jewelry at the School of Design of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and is the director of the Jewelry Design Department. He is a director of the Taihu Lake World Culture Forum, the deputy secretary-general of the Metal Art Committee of the China Arts and Crafts Association, and a member of the Cultural and Creative Design Professional Collaboration Committee of Beijing Colleges and Universities.
Liu Xiao's works have been exhibited in Australia, the Netherlands, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan and other countries and regions. As the only Chinese jewelry artist, he was selected for the 64th International Contemporary Jewelry Fair in Munich "Schmuck 2012", selected for the "Talente" 2014 Munich International Jewelry Fair in 2014, won the Grand Prize of Enjoia't 2014 Spanish Contemporary Jewelry Art Exhibition, and hosted a solo exhibition at A-FAD in Barcelona.
Liu Xiao once admitted that artists and teachers have their own industry rules, prospects and plans, but "there will be overlap and mutual role between the two", so he continues to create excellent works, while not forgetting the original intention of teachers, serious teaching, in-depth teaching and research, he edited and published "Contemporary Jewelry Design: Inspiration and Expression of Fantastic Ideas", "Jewelry Art Design and Production", "Jewelry Design and Craftsmanship Series".
