A self-driving car printed with the words "Radish Run" accurately stops at the designated location on the side of the road, and after the passengers get on the bus and sit down, they will successfully deliver the passengers to their destinations under the premise of ensuring safety and comfort.
This is the scene outside the venue of the Shenzhen Bay Sports Center today, and it is also the embodiment of Baidu's open manned test operation service officially landing in Shenzhen.
Starting from today, Shenzhen citizens and friends will be able to experience Baidu Radish Run in the main urban section of Nanshan District, Shenzhen. The way to book an autonomous vehicle is also simple:
Download the Radish Run APP, choose the nearest site, and wait patiently for the vehicle to arrive.
Previously, on February 14, Radish Capacity (Shenzhen) Technology Co., Ltd. was approved as a demonstration application of intelligent and connected vehicles in Shenzhen. Today, Baidu Radish Run's footprint has spread across the four super-first-tier cities in China, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen; at the same time, Shenzhen is also the seventh city to open manned test operation services after Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Changsha and Cangzhou.
Landed in Nanshan, Shenzhen
It was already two o'clock in the afternoon when the new intelligent driver arrived at the event site, even if it was not the peak travel period, there were still many vehicles on the road, which was challenging for the good operation of autonomous vehicles.
The total length of the experience route is about 6 kilometers, and the scope belongs to the core roads with dense traffic flow in Nanshan District. In general, basic operations such as autonomous vehicle crossing intersections and unprotected left turns can be completed smoothly, and they are also handled relatively smoothly when encountering social vehicle lane changes and congestion.
It is understood that the autonomous driving model used in Shenzhen is the first batch of front-loading mass-produced L4-level autonomous driving passenger cars in China jointly built by Baidu and FAW, Hongqi EV, which is China's first front-loading mass-produced unmanned vehicle (Robotaxi) and the fourth generation of Baidu Apollo unmanned vehicle.
From the scene of the situation, this car is equipped with 1 40-line lidar, 2 millimeter wave radar, 9 cameras, 1 group of ultrasonic radar, to achieve automatic driving software and hardware, production line pre-installation mass production capacity, in-vehicle human-computer interaction, safety redundancy and cloud fleet management of the all-round upgrade and optimization, is the result of Apollo's automatic driving technology iteration.
Not only that, The Faw-hongqi EV is equipped with Apollo customized OBU (vehicle unit), which can carry out L4-level vehicle-road collaborative perception driving with intelligent network-connected roadside equipment to realize the close integration of smart cars and intelligent roads.
In fact, in addition to the iterative optimization of its own technology, the landing of radish fast running in Nanshan District is also inseparable from the support of the municipal government.
The Nanshan District, which has a land area of 187.53 square kilometers and a coastline of 43.7 kilometers, is inhabited by more than 1.8 million permanent residents, and has rich cultural and tourism resources such as Shenzhen University, Shenzhen Bay Sports Center, Window of the World, Happy Valley, Nantou Ancient City, etc., and is also home to high-tech enterprises such as Tencent and Dajiang, which is an innovative highland in Shenzhen and even the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Relevant data show that in 2021, the GDP of Nanshan District reached 763.059 billion yuan, an increase of 112.837 billion yuan compared with the same period in 2020, an increase of 9.1% over the previous year at constant prices, ranking first in Shenzhen, and the only area in Shenzhen that has an increase of more than 100 billion yuan.
More importantly, in recent years, Nanshan District has actively promoted the global opening of unmanned road testing, and accelerated the orderly inclusion of urban trunk roads, highways, low-altitude areas, port terminals, regional distribution, and railway logistics bases into the test opening directory.
After landing in Nanshan District, Shenzhen, Baidu initially opened nearly 50 stations and invested 22 operating vehicles, running from 9:00 to 17:00 (including weekends).
It is understood that the demonstration application route of radish fast running covers the core areas such as Shenzhen Bay MixC, Poly Cultural Square, and Talent Park, and can provide artificial intelligence travel services for surrounding living areas, commercial areas, leisure and cultural areas. It is estimated that by the end of 2022, the scale of stations in the travel service area will reach more than 300.
Come prepared
Of course, expanding open operations to the public means having more solid technology and more abundant vehicles to support the needs of users. Just like human drivers, the more complex urban roads they drive, the more complex they are, the faster they can improve their reaction ability and drive better in new cities in the future.
Through multi-point landing, Radish Run has accumulated enough diversified data to feed the automatic driving system and strengthen the system's ability to handle long-tail scenarios - as mentioned earlier, Radish Run has previously opened up experience services in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Changsha, Cangzhou and other cities. Among them, Baidu has obtained the qualification of night and special weather test in Beijing.
Up to now, the size of the Apollo test fleet has reached 500 vehicles, 3400 patents have been obtained, and the total test mileage of nearly 30 cities around the world has been opened for road testing, with a total test mileage of more than 21 million kilometers; in terms of license plates, Baidu has obtained 411 Chinese autonomous driving test licenses, including 231 manned test licenses.
Radish Run plans to open up self-driving mobility services to 30 cities by the end of 2023, deploy at least 3,000 self-driving cars, and provide services for 3 million users. Expand to 65 cities by 2025 and 100 cities by 2030.
In addition, the Apollo Moon, a new generation of mass-produced unmanned vehicles, has also been added to the operation map of Radish Run, providing the public with richer travel options. According to the official introduction, the cost price of this car is 480,000 yuan, which is one-third of the average cost of the industry's L4 level autonomous driving models, which can indirectly reduce operating costs.
From any point of view, autonomous driving is further illuminating reality.
