On Zhongguancun South Street in Beijing's Haidian District, the Capital Gymnasium, built in the 1960s, has an extremely rich heritage. It has witnessed the diplomatic history of Sino-US table tennis and served as the venue for volleyball competitions at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. At the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, the Capital Gymnasium undertakes two competitions, figure skating and short track speed skating, both of which are China's dominant sports, and most of the gold medals in the history of the Chinese delegation in the Winter Olympics have been won in these two events.

Today's Capital Stadium, although retaining the old appearance, but the interior has been renewed - in order to prepare for the Beijing Winter Olympics, the Capital Stadium has undergone a 12-month renovation, upgrading the audio, video, ice, air conditioning system, etc., more environmentally friendly, more comfortable, more technological.

After the reconstruction, the size of the ice rink of the Capital Stadium is 31 meters × 61 meters, about 1800 square meters; the thickness of the ice plate is 5 cm, and the ice surface temperature is -4 °C to -5 °C. The Winter Olympic Games have extremely high requirements on the venue, and the ice experts and the construction party work together: after the rational layout of the ice pipe, equipment, control unit and sensor under the ice surface, the entire ice rink realizes a pouring molding, the flatness is controlled within 3 mm, and there is no crack in the ice surface of the 1800㎡ ice rink, when the athletes can fully experience the silky feeling when competing. The ice rink adopts the world's most advanced and environmentally friendly carbon dioxide ice making technology, which can control the temperature difference of the ice surface within 0.5 degrees Celsius, not only has a high heat recovery rate, but also has a 30% increase in refrigeration efficiency compared with the traditional way, and the refrigeration is very uniform, and the temperature of each part will not be different.

Yao Jia, director of the figure skating competition of the capital stadium group operation team, introduced that the ice thickness of figure skating is required to be 6 to 7 cm, and the temperature requirement is minus 3 degrees Celsius to minus 4 degrees Celsius; the ice thickness requirement for short track speed skating is 3 to 5 cm, and the temperature requirement is minus 6 degrees Celsius to minus 7 degrees Celsius. Through the CARBON dioxide ice system and the ice surface monitoring system, the venue can complete the ice pouring work within two hours, enabling the ice surface conversion of the two events.

The ice making process also combines efficiency with energy savings. The Capital Stadium recycles the waste heat generated during the refrigeration process, which can save more than 1 million kWh of electricity per year, greatly improving the green attributes of the venue.

36 projection films are configured above the ice plate, and the projector with the ice surface is 4 weeks away to form a sound and photoelectric projection technology. During the race, laser projectors in the four corners of the venue will cast brilliant lights and beautiful pictures on the screen, creating a dreamlike ice and snow world.

The drainage pipe under the ice rink flows with a carbon dioxide liquid of about minus 13 °C, which can continuously cool the artificially poured water to form an ice surface. The core of the system is two transcritical CO2 refrigeration compressor units and a CO2 barrel pump unit manufactured at the Baier Refrigeration Wuxi plant.

When talking about the difficulties and difficulties of design, Technical Director Xie Wei said that the system uses the current cutting-edge refrigeration and ice-making technology, before which only a small number of applications were used in Europe, and it can be said that when it was developed, it was started from scratch without reference. In order to improve the design work as much as possible, the design engineers have worked overtime for several months in a row, and some members have even lost 10 pounds in a month.

What the whole team remembers most is the commissioning of the first oil return system of the barrel pump unit in the Capital Stadium. At the beginning of the entire system online operation, the refrigeration system worked normally to cool the ice rink smoothly, and the system also lasted for 2-3 hours of stable operation. However, just when everyone thought it should be okay, an accident happened.

In the subsequent inspection, the team members found that the oil return system of the barrel pump unit was not working properly, and the normal oil return could not be returned, which also indirectly led to a large amount of liquid return in the system. All the people present checked until 2 a.m. overnight, and finally found that the problem appeared on the control valve of the oil returner, and after readjusting the valve, the system work finally returned to normal. Xie Wei confessed that although he was physically exhausted at that moment, his spiritual joy was really indescribable...

"Compared with traditional refrigeration systems, transcritical CO2 refrigeration systems are particularly prominent in both green and energy-efficient aspects, and the energy saving efficiency is increased by 50% compared with traditional Freon carrier refrigerant systems. At the same time, the system is a generalist, not only cooling the ice rink, but also heating the rest of the venue. For example, the hot water used by athletes to bathe, the hot water used to clean up the ice surface of the ice rink, etc., all come from this system. Xie Wei said that the Capital Gymnasium has also become the first batch of Winter Olympic venues in China to use green carbon dioxide as a refrigerant.
