According to legend, during Zhuge Liang's Northern Expedition to the Central Plains, he was once besieged by the Wei army in Pingyang, and the battle was very fierce, until the grain and grass were exhausted. Zhuge Liang was very anxious, but the message of distress could not be transmitted, and he had no choice but to think of using a lamp to summon the message. He invented a lamp that hid the message for distress in the lamp, rode the downwind, and then used the upward gravitational pull of the smoke to send the lamp out.

The origin of Kong Ming lamp

The lamp flew to the base camp of the Shu Kingdom, and after the guard general Jiang Wei received it, he immediately sent troops to the rescue. After the arrival of the army, the Wei army was defeated, Zhuge Liang was able to escape from danger, and Pingyang was able to break the siege. In order to commemorate the merits of the lamp, the Shu army named this lamp "Kong Ming Lantern".

According to legend, during the five generations (907-960), the Kong Ming lantern was also used as a military communication tool. There was a Xinqiniang in Fujian who helped her husband fight in the war, and once used Kong Ming lanterns to transmit military contact information, and won the victory. Yang Liulang of the Song Dynasty, at the critical juncture of defending the three passes, also used the Kong Ming lantern to transmit the information of the army and defeated the invasion of the Liao army.

The common people of Sichuan and Yunnan were often robbed by bandits. One year, bandits came, frightening people into hiding in the mountains. On the fifteenth day of the first month, the officers and soldiers defeated the bandits, but the people in the mountains did not know it. So the people down the mountain all set off Kong Ming lanterns and reported the news. So people all went home. Since then, on the fifteenth day of the first month, people have set off Kong Ming lanterns as a souvenir. Later, a custom was formed, and every Lantern Festival, Kong Ming lanterns were lit as a prayer for happiness.
