Challenge iPhone supremacy Samsung discontinued Note sprint "folding machine"

Samsung Electronics' smartphone strategy has made the biggest adjustment in years, and will be regrouped around the hot-selling Galaxy S and foldable device Galaxy Z. The company plans to discontinue the Note series with stylus and deploy this feature to other products, while storming the high-end foldable machine to challenge Apple's iPhone.

Lu Taiwen, who took over Samsung's mobile communications business two years ago, said in a rare interview: "In the short term, our business will focus on a two-track strategy: the flagship S series in the first half of the year and the innovative folding machine in the second half. This strategy will sustain until another major breakthrough occurs. ”

The world's largest smartphone maker released its latest Galaxy S22 series on Wednesday. Tactically, despite rampant inflation and rising component costs, prices remained at last year's level: the base model retailed for $800, the larger Galaxy S22+ sold for $1,000, and the top-of-the-line Galaxy S22 Ultra with a 6.8-inch big screen and S Pen stylus sold for $1,200.

Not long ago, Samsung and Apple both raised the starting price of the flagship smart phone to $1,000. While some fans still pay out of pocket, the mass market prefers lower prices. Users also extend the time they hold older machines and infrequently pursue upgrades.

The iPhone 13, priced at the same $800 as the previous year, was appreciated by analysts for helping apple achieve record sales and profits in the final months of last year. The Samsung Galaxy S21 also saw a surge in shipments last year after a $200 price cut.

Tom Kang, head of research at Seoul-based Counterpoint, said that while rising costs of key raw materials weighed on profits, maintaining the original price would cater to more people and could attract buyers who were hesitant to upgrade their machines.

Samsung, which chose not to release a new Note last August and bet on foldable products to fill the void, has seen results, with sales in this category growing several times and driving up the average selling price of Samsung's mobile devices.

Lu Taiwen said that Samsung will focus on the high-end market to drive growth. He said: "Because of the epidemic, the smartphone industry has experienced changes that may take 10 years in the past. We are entering the second phase of market growth, with consumers using smartphones for longer and more use than before, and the demand for high-end machines is increasing.
