The background of the story is about 1040, the mayor of Coventry married the beautiful and kind Ge Dewa as his wife, with a dignified and beautiful temperament, husband and wife love, and the citizens also love her very much. However, in order to support the British army to go out on the expedition, the levy was widely reborn, and the hundred people lived in poverty and resentment. The protagonist, Gerdewa, was sullen all day, so the Count asked her why she was depressed all day. So she proposed that her husband reduce taxes and reduce the burden on the people, so that they could all live a good life. The count was very angry, and felt that the lady was depressed for a group of untouchables, and the two quarreled over it. So the two made a bet, the lady rode naked around the city, and if the citizens did not go out and did not peep, proving that they were trustworthy people, they announced a tax cut.
Early the next morning, Gerdewa rode slowly and calmly up the street, and the count tried to stop it, but finally bowed his head in shame and followed behind.
In this way, in the process of detour, the citizens consciously closed their doors and closed their homes, the streets were empty, and people did not go out of their homes. So the count kept his promise and announced the tax cuts, and the people sang and danced to show their gratitude to the count and his wife.
A few years later, the British painter Currier heard about this story and used it as a background for this oil painting of Madame Gödelle on Horseback.
Currier's style of painting was inherited from Raphael, and he excelled in portraiture. Other painters have created sculptures and oil paintings based on this legend. Later, 31 May of the Gordeva Horse Riding Parade was celebrated as one of the anniversaries of the city of Coventry.
