American actress Shirley Knight died at the age of 83. Knight's daughter confirmed the death to the media, but did not say the cause of death.

Knight has twice been nominated for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for "Dark Ladder Top" and "Deep Love obsession", and also won the Venice film queen with "Ghost Train".

In 1996, she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Series for The McMartin Trial. In the hit American drama Desperate Housewives, she played Rex's mom.
