Chip business was blocked, procurement fell from third to seventh, and Huawei's winter was colder than expected

I have to admit that the change in chip rules has a very large impact on Huawei, and the decline in mobile phone business is a good proof. According to the author's understanding, before Huawei's chip business was blocked, Huawei's annual mobile phone shipments were nearly 200 million units, ranking among the top three in the world.

However, affected by chip supply, in 2021, Huawei's mobile phone sales will only be 35 million units, which have been surpassed by Xiaomi and Apple, and the market share has fallen by as much as 82%.

Huawei's winters are colder than expected

Due to the continuous increase in sanctions imposed by relevant parties, the procurement of Huawei chips has become more and more difficult. Gartner, a well-known market research agency, released a list of chip purchases, and in 2021, Huawei's purchase of chips was only $15.382 billion, falling to seventh.

You know, in 2020, huawei's purchase of chips can reach 22.71 billion US dollars, ranking third in the world.

In contrast, Huawei's chip purchases fell by 32.3%.

For technology companies like Huawei, the decline in chip procurement means that the number of chip purchases is limited and the development of related businesses is also hindered.

Looking at this list of chip companies purchasing, only Huawei's semiconductor procurement has fallen sharply, apple, Lenovo, xiaomi and Samsung have shown a growth trend, which shows that Huawei's winter is colder than imagined.

In fact, although the US ban has caused Huawei heavy losses, it has also had a huge impact on many chip companies in the United States.

As we all know, Huawei's cooperation is relatively open, in terms of chip procurement, basically come to the United States chip companies, such as Qualcomm, Broadcom, Micron and Intel, etc., have a deep cooperative relationship with Huawei.

In other words, Huawei's chip purchases have decreased significantly, and these U.S. companies that have partnerships with Huawei will also reduce their revenue.

It is precisely because of this that after the ban took effect, many US companies began to lobby relevant departments to restore cooperative relations with Huawei.

The most critical thing is that the US measures against Huawei have had many chain reactions, such as Chinese mobile phone manufacturers, which have begun to reduce their dependence on Qualcomm chips and choose the chips of MediaTek and Tsinghua Unigroup, so that Qualcomm has completely lost the throne of mobile phone chip leader and was completely replaced by MediaTek.

How long will Huawei's winter last?

The blockage of the chip business has indeed caused a great impact on Huawei, and in the past 2021, it is also actively looking for a way to break the game.

In the author's view, Huawei's dilemma in chips is difficult to solve in a short period of time, on the one hand, the outside world's ban on Huawei has not been relaxed in the slightest, and it still increases the blockade of Huawei;

On the other hand, the domestic chip industry chain is not particularly helpful to Huawei, because what Huawei lacks most at present is advanced chips, while mainland chip manufacturing companies do not have the ability to produce high-precision chips.

Therefore, how long Huawei's cold winter will last, it is still uncertain, and we can only hope that domestic chips can achieve a breakthrough as soon as possible.

It is worth mentioning that Huawei has been making up for business losses caused by the lack of cores, such as Huawei's entry into the field of new energy vehicles, the full implementation of 5G technology commercialization and so on.

Moreover, Huawei is also constantly helping the rapid development of the domestic chip industry, and the Hubble Investment Company it established has invested in a number of domestic chip companies, involving chip materials, semiconductor equipment, and basic development software.

According to Huawei Yu Chengdong, in 2023, Huawei's mobile phone business will return to the king, perhaps, it has solved chip-related problems.

Write to the end

For Huawei, the cold winter is only temporary, and the dilemma of chips will be solved sooner or later, because not only Huawei itself is trying to break through the chip dilemma, the entire domestic chip industry chain is trying to break through and create a truly pure domestic chip industry chain.

It is expected that Huawei's mobile phone business can return to its former style.
