Vodafone Portugal was attacked by a cyberattack that caused the country to lose its network

Recently, Vodafone Portugal suffered a major cyber attack, resulting in service interruptions in the country, and media reported that 4G/5G communications and television services were temporarily suspended.

Vodafone was the target of a network outage that began on the evening of February 7, 2022, because a deliberate and malicious cyberattack was designed to cause damage and disruption. As soon as Vodafone detects the first signs of a network problem, it takes immediate action to identify and control the impact and restore service. This situation is affecting the delivery of services based on data networks, namely 4G/5G networks, fixed voice, television, SMS and voice/digital response services.

Vodafone labeled the incident a "deliberate and malicious attack designed to cause damage," and the company had no evidence that customer data had been accessed as a result of the attack.

The Associated Press reported: "Monday night's attack affected the company's 4G and 5G services, fixed-line and text messaging services, and digital and voice customer service." On that day, almost the country only had 3G networks turned on, and the company is working to restore the affected services.

Vodafone Portugal has more than 4 million mobile phone users in the country, as well as around 3.4 million home and business Internet customers.

"It is certain that the in-depth investigation into the criminal acts we have suffered will continue indefinitely with the involvement of the competent authorities, so we have no evidence to date that customer data has been accessed and/or compromised." Continue with the announcement.

Vodafone did not disclose details of the attack, but the disruption and unavailability of its systems indicate that the company was attacked by ransomware.

Earlier this year, the Lapsus$ ransomware gang hacked into the infrastructure of Impresa, Portugal's largest media group. Impresa owns the SIC TV channel and the Expresso newspaper, as well as other major media outlets such as several magazine publications.

The attack took place during the New Year's Day holiday and impresa group websites, SIC TV channels and Expresso websites were forced offline.
