The heat pump caused Tesla owners to lose heat in extreme cold conditions, and Tesla's subsequent software fixes have now been disclosed in more detail in the new NHTSA recall.

Last month, Electrek reported that Tesla owners lost heat in extreme cold conditions because some heat pumps failed. As we explained, this problem first appeared last winter on Tesla cars equipped with the automaker's new heat pump system, which was first introduced to the Model Y and added to an updated version of the Model 3. It was the first full winter of both cars. At the time, Tesla said it had solved the problem through a software update, but a year later, the problem re-emerged as extreme cold waves hit multiple parts of the world. Many Tesla owners complained that they lost heat in extreme cold conditions, and several owners who drove their cars to service centers replaced the entire heat pump system. A week later, CEO Elon Musk said a software update was being released to recalibrate a valve in the heat pump system that should solve the problem. The update seems to reduce the problem, but there are still some reports of Tesla owners suddenly losing heat.
