In fact, at least 1 in 5 people have bad breath[1], and probably you are (most people with bad breath don't know they have it).

Today, we have selected some common problems of bad breath that you are most concerned about and solved them together!

Mainly the mouth! The stomach is very wronged!

80% to 90% of the causes of bad breath are problems from the mouth itself (oral-derived bad breath) [2], such as periodontitis, caries (tooth decay), mouth ulcers, stumps and crowns.

Lesions of the nasal cavity, throat, stomach, etc., such as rhinitis, bronchitis, and gastroesophageal reflux disease, may also have symptoms of bad breath [3]. This type of non-oral bad breath accounts for 4% to 10% [4].

The foul smell of bad breath, mainly sulfides, is volatile. These substances are produced by specific oral bacteria that break down proteins.

Oral-derived bad breath is most closely related to two of these bacteria, Melanin-producing bacillus and Nucleated Clostridium [5].

Substances such as food debris in the mouth, renewed shedding epithelial cells, and periodontal bleeding are all "ingredients" for feeding these bacteria.

Improper oral hygiene care and decomposition of food residues are common causes of bad breath eventually occur.

In particular, diseased periodontal tissue and thick tongue moss can affect the balance of oral flora, resulting in bad breath.

yes!

Under normal circumstances, close contact between adjacent teeth, as well as good tooth morphology, can prevent food from stuffing. However, if there are problems such as tooth decay, misalignment, and excessive loosening, the gap between the teeth may become larger, and the teeth are not inevitable [6].

If you are too lazy to clean up, the accumulated food residue becomes a "big meal" for bacteria. Proteins in food are broken down to produce sulfides, which are the main components of "farts"...

Be sure to floss your mouth after meals, and it is better to brush your teeth if you have the conditions!

That is true.

Smoking itself is a cause of gingivitis and periodontitis [7].

Tar and nicotine in tobacco can cause chronic pharyngitis and bronchitis [8].

Smoking also leads to decreased saliva production and a dry mouth, which weakens the self-cleaning ability of the mouth [9].

The above factors can lead to the occurrence of bad breath.

Quit smoking is recommended!

The main ingredient in meat is protein. The Dietary Guidelines for Chinese Residents recommend that eating 80-150 grams of meat per day is sufficient .[10] More than 80-150 grams, eat more meat, the work burden of the intestine is aggravated, and it cannot digest so much at once, and the intestinal bacteria will come to help break down excess protein and produce smelly sulfides.

These stinky soldiers split into two ways, rushing downstream to kill and become farts; and the other way up they will exhale from their mouths, causing bad breath.

No.

Cola contains sugar, and coffee may have milk, which are the favorite foods of bacteria. Different bacteria form a "bacterial community", that is, plaque. Everyone has a happy dinner together, of course, they will also excrete...

Coffee and cola will also temporarily reduce saliva secretion, resulting in dry mouth and sticky mouth. At this time, the self-cleaning ability of the oral cavity is reduced, which is more conducive to the settlement of bacteria, followed by reproduction and fermentation (breaking down proteins), causing bad breath [11].

It is recommended to rinse your mouth with water after drinking coffee and cola.

But it's better than not brushing!

The causes of bad breath are manifold, and brushing your teeth alone cannot be completely eliminated. After meals, floss or a toothbrush can be used to remove food debris that cannot be cleaned by brushing teeth.

If you still have a taste and are very troubled, you can go to the dentist to check whether there are any oral diseases such as caries (tooth decay), gingivitis, periodontitis and so on. If so, caries restoration, scaling, scraping, root leveling and other treatments can be performed to remove plaque.

If oral problems are ruled out and there is bad breath, go to the ENT to check for sinusitis, pharyngitis, etc., or go to the gastroenterology department to check for gastrointestinal diseases [8,12].

It is originally a palliative treatment rather than a cure.

Chewing gum can only temporarily disguise bad breath. The vast majority of bad breath comes from oral diseases, bad breath can not be tolerated, or to go to the stomatology department!

I really can't say for sure!

There is currently insufficient evidence that Helicobacter pylori (HP) causes bad breath.

Some researchers have carried out eradication treatment for people with bad breath and carrying Helicobacter pylori at the same time, and the results obtained are inconsistent.

Some studies have found that halitosis improves significantly after HP eradication, while others have found no improvement in bad breath even after eradication [13,14].

Mainly lazy!

Bad breath in children is mainly caused by poor oral hygiene, plaque deposition, and may also be due to pubertal gingivitis caused by changes in the hormones of puberty.

Hormonal changes can make the gums sensitive, and irritation by local irritants such as plaque can easily induce inflammation. Children often bleed while brushing their teeth or biting hard objects, accompanied by bad breath.

Therapeutically, local irritants are removed [15]. That is, through the removal of plaque and tartar by cleansing, combined with local medicine and gargling of the gums, it can generally be cured.

Parents should also urge their children to develop the good habit of brushing their teeth regularly to prevent recurrence.

Fake!

There is indeed some literature mentioning that vitamin B6 deficiency can cause severe gingivitis and bad breath [16].

However, the vast majority of bad breath is caused by poor oral hygiene and plaque deposition, and vitamin supplementation alone is not effective in alleviating it, and it is necessary to systematically treat it according to the recommendations of a dentist [13].

Buy Buy Buy!

Try a special product that cleans the tongue, such as a tongue scraper, or some electric toothbrushes that have a tongue-cleansing function.

Dry vomiting during brushing may also be a symptom caused by chronic pharyngitis, bile reflux gastritis, and gastroesophageal reflux.

Women who have had normal sex and have delayed menstruation may also have a pregnancy reaction after pregnancy [17].

In these cases, you can choose some small-headed toothbrushes and try to avoid brushing too close to your throat when brushing your teeth.

Go to the hospital!

Periodontitis causes bad breath, which is mainly caused by calculus, residues on soft scale, bacteria, and the formation of inflammatory substances.

Periodontal treatments such as cleansing, scraping, and root leveling can completely remove foreign bodies from the mouth and control inflammation, combined with strengthening oral hygiene, and can effectively treat bad breath [17,18].

It's possible!

The first thing to do is to rule out diseases within the scope of the mouth. If there is no abnormality in oral health, it is not excluded that it is caused by tonsil stones.

Inside the tonsils there are different shades of tonsillar crypts, which are easy to hide shedding epithelial cells, white blood cells, as well as food residues and bacteria.

Tonsil stones can affect the discharge of these things in the crypt.

If the stone is relatively small and does not cause significant discomfort to the body, special treatment is generally not necessary.

If there is a pronounced foreign body sensation, repeated infection of the tonsils, it will produce a peculiar smell, resulting in bad breath.

Usually pay attention to oral hygiene, bad breath can be alleviated.

If bad breath is obvious and seriously affects work and life, tonsillectomy should be done. After surgery, bad breath due to tonsil stones is resolved [18].

Help you draw the point

1. Poor oral hygiene, as well as certain diseases of the mouth, digestive tract and other parts, are the main causes of bad breath. Chronic pharyngitis, tonsil stones, etc. may cause bad breath.

2. The relationship between Helicobacter pylori and bad breath does not have much scientific basis.

3. Bad breath, gum recession and bleeding are all symptoms of periodontitis. Periodontal treatments such as cleansing, scraping, and root leveling can be resolved.

4. Children have bad breath, focusing on developing a good habit of brushing their teeth regularly.

5. Simple vitamin B supplementation can not cure bad breath.

6. Brushing your tongue while brushing your teeth can reduce bad breath.
