A doctor's empathy

In the year of 2017, I was also a sad year, experiencing what is called "like a fish in the throat" twice in a row, that is, because the fish bones were stuck in the throat and went to the hospital to ask the doctor to pull it out under the laryngoscope. There are also wrists that are scratched by glasses and sutured in the hospital, as a patient, I have also been to the hospital several times, even if the people who examined and treated me were my classmates or friends, but I still deeply felt the fear and fear of a patient.

Even as a doctor myself, I knew that these things I knew were small problems, no big deal. However, I remember when the doctor took the laryngoscope to take a stab in my throat, or when the needle holder in the doctor's hand held a round needle and stitched it into my wrist, my eyes were closed, my heart was trembling, my head was riding the clouds, I was so scared that my soul was lost, and I actually cried out in fright.

However, the doctors who still clearly remember me for examination or suture surgery gently comforted me, soothed my nervous emotions, and gradually restored my calm. The doctor used a soft heart, warm words, and gentle movements to make me feel the most sincere comfort in my life, and let my heart settle down at once.

When eating at the barbecue restaurant at noon today, I suddenly felt that something was stuck in my throat, originally I had a cold these two days, I should eat some light food, but I really couldn't stand the temptation of grilled meat, and accompanied my husband and daughter to eat charcoal roast beef, pork belly and so on. While eating, I felt a foreign body sensation in my throat, as if something was stuck in it, so I ran to the bathroom and coughed hard, spitting out all the food, and there was dark red blood spit out, and there was still a foreign body sensation in my throat.

A few years ago, the situation of the stab in the throat appeared in front of me again, and I was a little scared in my heart, so I hurried to the hospital to see it. So I went to the general hospital where I used to work, and today it happens to be my old classmate who is attending the specialist clinic, and he is the director of the otolaryngology department of this hospital. He probed into my laryngeal cavity with a long laryngeal mirror and showed it to me gently and quickly, and before I could feel unwell, the mirror in his hand came out, and his movements were really sharp enough to make me feel uncomfortable.

After the examination, he told me that there was no foreign body in the throat, that is, the throat was congested and there were small blood bubbles in the pharynx, which did not matter much, and it was enough to go home and take some medicine. The old classmate is an expert in this field, and after listening to his words, my uneasy heart is solid. He prescribed me some medicine and told me to eat lightly. The old classmate still had many patients waiting to see, and seeing that he was too busy, I only had two words of greeting with him before going to the pharmacy to get medicine.

I usually go to my old classmates or old friends to see if I have physical problems, I feel very close, there is no sense of distance and guard, I know that they are like to me like their own relatives, there will be no utilitarianism, they are trustworthy. Although it is very hard to be a doctor, the risk is great, and the income is not high, there are still natural advantages in seeking medical treatment for themselves and their families, and many of the experts in major hospitals in the state are their classmates or friends.

A doctor's empathy

As a doctor, in fact, I can heal occasionally, I often help, and I am always comforting. Even if modern science is so developed, some areas are artificial intelligence diagnosis and treatment of diseases, but there are still many diseases that medicine cannot solve. Medicine is a combination of science and philosophy, science cannot solve all diseases, and the rest is solved by philosophy or faith. When doctors face problems that science cannot solve at present, verbal comfort is a good medicine. And some small problems in the weekdays, as long as the language can be done.

When we work in the outpatient clinic, many patients originally did not suffer from any serious diseases, but always felt that they had a terminal illness, took out the problem of full stomach and kept consulting the doctor, the doctor saw more, and did not bother to explain too much, and there was a large row of patients waiting in the back, sometimes the doctor did not even have time to go to the toilet, where can there be too much waste of tongue? I can't wait to send the patient away in minutes. Therefore, quickly open laboratory tests and examination lists, and let patients do many examinations.

In fact, patients may not have any big problems, and they don't necessarily need to do so many tests, but just want to talk to the doctor more. Especially for patients who are not sick in the body and have some psychological problems, the doctor can solve the problem as long as he is a little patient and explains more. I really can't solve it, so I can suggest that he go to the psychology department to see.

Sometimes, multiple smiles and multiple words of comfort can make patients feel warm. Listening to the patient's speech, smiling more, nodding more, and asking questions at the right time will calm him down and feel very comfortable. Listening is more useful than your own rhetoric. You need to put yourself in his shoes to feel his sadness, pain, and helplessness, and you need to understand how he feels in the moment. Learning to empathize and to know how to soothe is especially important in the careers of our doctors. Patients need not only cold and various examinations, but also the humanistic care and warmth of doctors.

Each of us will encounter more or less difficult encounters, such as juvenile ups and downs, youth hardships, hardships on the road to study, career bottlenecks, mid-life crises, old age loneliness, etc. Our doctors have also encountered many tribulations, so when patients encounter physical pain, we can put ourselves in his shoes, learn to be compassionate, and better comfort patients. We learn to comfort in order to better relieve the pain caused by the patient's disease, become calm in the comfort, and find ways to solve the problems for the patient.

No matter how the world treats doctors, I always feel that doctors should be gentle with patients. Although doctors bear too much burden, too much pressure, and have been treated unfairly, they still give back to society with love and enthusiasm. Whenever I go to the hospital, I feel that when I am a patient, the feeling of being a doctor is not the same as the feeling of being a doctor. Only when we truly feel the pain of a patient, we will comfort and help the patient with our hearts and feelings.
