Stockton Fire Chief Rick Edwards said that earlier on January 31, local time, Max Fortuna and other firefighters were sent to the scene to deal with a fire caused by a garbage bin fire, but they heard gunshots during the fire extinguishing. Firefighters at the scene quickly provided emergency medical care to Fortuna, who was shot, and took him to a local hospital. Edwards added that the death of the firefighter colleague was deeply saddening to him.

Edwards added, "It's my worst nightmare as a fire chief." It was a very, very sad day for our fire department. Jim Chraska, acting police chief of Stockton, said police responded and detained a 67-year-old man. Kraska did not reveal the man's identity and said an investigation was ongoing and a gun was found at the scene.

Edwards noted that Fortuna, 47, has worked in the sector for more than 21 years, leaving behind his wife and two adult children. Stockton Mayor Kevin Lincoln, who called the firefighter a hero, said, "It gives us a sobering awareness that firefighters make many sacrifices every day to serve our communities." (Edit: HHJ)
