Published in 1870, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea is one of the masterpieces of the French adventure novelist Jules Verne. In 1866, some people thought that a narwhal had been seen at sea, and the French biologist Aronnax discovered that it was a submarine called the Nautilus. He then took his servant Consel and a whaler, the Nederland, and followed Captain Nemo on a twenty-thousand-mile journey around the sea in this submarine.
