Today in history | Birth of Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine Conrad Bloch

Conrad Bloch was born on 21 January 1912 in Silesianis. Bloch is a well-known American biochemist, Bloch has a deep research in lipid biochemistry and metabolism, and has made outstanding contributions to cholesterol and fatty acid biosynthesis. In 1964, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

In 1930 Bloch studied at the Technical University of Munich, but due to the persecution of Jews after the Nazi Party came to power, he fled to Davos, Switzerland, and in 1936 moved to the United States to enter the Department of Biochemistry at Columbia University College. He received his Doctor of Philosophy degree from Columbia University in 1938 and began teaching at the university the following year until 1946. Bloch then taught at the University of Chicago and Harvard University, where he continued his research on lipids, especially unsaturated fatty acids. In 1942, together with D. Rittenberg, it was discovered that the biosynthesis of cholesterol can be divided into more than 30 steps, and acetic acid is the basic raw material. He and F. Lunan received the 1964 Nordsch Physiology and Medicine Prize for their discovery of cholesterol and fatty acid biosynthesis. He retired in 1982. He died of a heart attack in Lexington, Massachusetts on October 15, 2000, at the age of 88.
