With the support of his family, researchers at the University of Alabama in Birmingham performed a groundbreaking transplant on him 4 days later. Two pig kidneys have survived for more than 3 days.
Jayme Locke, director of the Institute of Integrative Transplantation at the University of Alabama's Department of Surgery at Birmingham and lead surgeon for the study, said this is an important moment in the history of medicine and an important milestone in the field of xenotransplantation.
