Hu Xiaoguang engaged in theatrical activities at the age of 16, joined the army in 1948 and entered the Liaodong Military Region's Cultural and Labor Troupe, and a year later transferred to the Guangzhou Military Region's Soldiers' Drama Troupe, where he participated in dozens of drama performances.
Hu Xiaoguang's first film was "The People's Warrior", released in 1952 and directed by Zhai Qiang and starring Li Changhua, Liu Xin and Du Defu, in which he played the political commissar of the regiment.
