[European Times Wang Jian compiled] Police killed a young man in his twenties during an arrest operation in the center of Nice on January 19.
On Christmas Eve last year, a 24-year-old man in the Las Planas neighborhood north of Nice died after being shot in the chest. The police determined that it was a murder caused by a fight between gangs in different neighborhoods and opened an investigation. On the morning of January 19, the police launched a series of arrests. According to Nice prosecutor Xavier Bonhomme, one of the arrests went unabated when a police officer opened fire and hit a man in the neck who died 45 minutes later. Exactly why the shooting was fired is unclear.
Born in 1999 and died at 12:30, Bonom said, no weapons were found and no previous convictions were found. The body of the deceased fell near a car whose "license plate was fake, so it is likely that it was stolen and belonged to the criminal gang targeted by the arrest operation". The police officer who fired the shot was a member of the Nice Judicial Police Tracking and Intervention Brigade (BRI), a commander and very experienced. He was "detained on charges of intentional homicide" and the Inspector General of National Police (IGPN) will launch an investigation.
Witnesses told AFP that police were operating on a small city centre road about 500 metres from Promenade des Anglais, during which only one gunshot was heard.
Prosecutor Bonom said the day's operations targeted multiple people, and several others went well, arresting multiple people by noon, several of whom were detained.
