Yin Wen did not answer directly but asked King Qi what was the standard of the scholar in his heart, and this rhetorical question made king Qi difficult, and for a moment and a half he was unable to say a specific standard.
When Yin Wen saw that King Qi could not speak, he then asked king Qi if there were such people now, who were loyal to the monarch, filial to his parents, honest to his friends, and kind to his countrymen. King Qi said of course, such a person is exactly the scholar I am after. Yin Wen knew that King Qi liked brave people, so he asked if this person was humiliated in public, but he never dared to fight with people, then would you still appoint him? King Qi immediately denied that such a person was still a scholar? I would never appoint a person who has been bullied but is not ashamed. Speaking of this, Yin Wen criticized the King of Qi and said that the Great King, you will want to use him as a vassal for a while, and then you will not want to use him for a while, so does the standard of the scholar you just admitted not count? King Qi was immediately dumbfounded.
A person who meets certain conditions is a scholar, but when there is a shortcoming that he does not like, this person is immediately rejected for nothing, is this not a "white horse and not a horse" in a sense? The same reason was also used by Tang Taizong Li Shimin, who asked Feng Deyi to recommend talents to him, but after a long time, Feng Deyi did not recommend a person. Li Shimin reprimanded Feng Deyi for not doing a good job of recommending, and Feng Deyi replied with grievances that it was not that I did not care to do it, but that there were no outstanding talents in the world! Li Shimin immediately criticized him for using people and utensils to choose his strengths, and did the emperors who could achieve great things in the past and the present borrow their talents from other dynasties?!
