On March 5, 1944, after making full preparations, the First Division of the New Fourth Army launched a fierce and rapid general attack on cheqiao, a major town in central Jiangsu.

The remnants of the Japanese army successfully "broke through" the defensive line and retreated all the way to the northeast.
