After the billionaire said the government had "challenged" to delay the launch of his electric car company on the ground, Indian politicians tweeted for Elon Musk's attention to chase the coveted right to own a Tesla factory.

Tesla's hopes of selling its cars in one of the world's largest markets have stalled due to efforts to negotiate lower import tariffs, which could be as high as 100 percent.

After being asked about a possible release date last week, Musk tweeted that his California-based company "is still working with the government on many challenges" without providing further details.

The comments have since prompted ministers in several Indian states to respond on Twitter, publicly courting the world's richest man , himself a prolific user of social media platforms.

"Hey Elon, I'm the minister of industry and commerce of the Indian state of Telangana," KT Rama Rao responded to Musk on Twitter on Friday.

Three other states filed their cases over the weekend.

In Punjab, lawmaker and retired international cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu has committed to green work and sustainable development.

Musk has tweeted several times since posting the "Challenge" comment last week, but has so far not responded to any of his Indian requests.

New Delhi has introduced incentives to encourage foreign automakers to produce cars locally, but Musk said he wants to measure demand first by imports.

India imposes a 100 percent tax on imported electric vehicles worth more than $40,000, and Tesla fears high tariffs will pull them out of the cost-sensitive Indian market.

According to research by digital consultancy Techarc, electric vehicles accounted for only 1.3% of all car sales in the country in 2020-21.

The government aims to electrify 30% of private cars by 2030 as part of a broader push to decarbonise the transport sector.
