"We were ordered to advance towards the Chosin Lake area, which was icy and snowy, and the temperature reached minus 35 degrees Celsius at night. In order to go light, we changed into cloth shoes and sneakers, and the snow was very thick at that time, and all below the knees was not in the snow, so we walked through the snow step by step, over several mountains, found the attack point and hid. Zhao Mingyi clearly remembers that it was November 27, 1950. At that time, more than 10 enemy planes of the US army repeatedly flew overhead to strafe, and the comrades-in-arms did not dare to move, because they were afraid of being discovered, they deliberately wore cotton clothes and cotton pants in reverse, and the white lining was mixed with the white snow, and it was more than 10 hours a lie. "Many comrades-in-arms died under the bullets." Zhao Mingyi's eye sockets were a little moist.
Seizing the perfect opportunity to attack, the 9th Company of the 3rd Battalion of the 240th Regiment of the Chinese Volunteer Army suddenly launched a main attack on the 1475 Heights on the east side of the road. The American troops on the hill were defeated, and some of the remnants fled to Xinxingli at the bottom of the mountain. At 6:30 a.m. the next morning, the U.S. army suddenly launched an attack, the sound of wind and snow, the sound of shells, the sound of gunfire... Various sounds were mixed together, and the shores of Chosin Lake "boomed". More than 10 US fighters took turns to dive at a low altitude to strafe and drop bombs. Zhao Mingyi's military doctor Li Haoju and the hygienist Young Xian were unfortunately shot in the chest and sacrificed. Sun Rongli, a hygienist, was injured in the abdomen and was half lying by the side of the artillery hole. "I rushed up to bandage them, rescue them, and transport them down the mountain." In the rain of enemy guns and bullets, Zhao Mingyi bandaged 14 wounded comrades in succession.

After the American planes exploded wildly, the infantry rushed up. Suddenly, I heard someone shouting, the enemy rushed up, and everyone quickly counterattacked! The bolt was completely frozen to death, and it could not be pulled open, so I grabbed the grenade and frantically threw it at the enemy. When the enemy is in sight, we will raise our bayonets and engage the enemy in a white-knife battle..."
From 6:30 a.m. to 12 noon, the enemy "counterattacked" more than a dozen times, and the volunteer soldiers fought bravely. On the shores of Lake Chosin in December, it was freezing cold, and the comrades wore thin cotton jackets and sneakers on their feet, stubbornly fighting against the well-equipped U.S. army. Zhao Mingyi went back and forth to rescue and transport the wounded, his two hands were frozen, and it was difficult to wrap the bandages, because the hands did not listen to the call and could not tie the knot, and he picked up the scissors but cut the gauze head continuously. During this time, at about 11 o'clock, a jet enemy plane suddenly swooped down on him. "It's like being pushed hard, my left hand is tingling, and I shake violently." Zhao Mingyi recalled. Waking up, Zhao Mingyi couldn't take care of himself, and immediately carried a soldier who had been shot in the chest to the ambulance station for rescue. "I felt a little pain in my arms and legs at this point, and when I touched it, the whole sleeve of my left arm was cold and stiff." It turned out that his arm had been injured, and the blood that flowed out had frozen into ice.
After several hours of fierce fighting, the 3rd Battalion of the 240th Regiment of the Chinese Volunteer Army finally held its position, and in this large corps operation, the Chinese Volunteer Army, without the support of air fire, annihilated the A Company A unit of the 31st Combat Regiment of the 7th Division of the US Infantry, known as the "Ace Army", the "Polar Bear Regiment".
When talking about why we won the victory, Zhao Mingyi said excitedly: "The US military is fighting for individuals, fighting for the 250,000 US dollar allowance, and we are fighting for the party and the country!"
