A few days ago, the list of the Fifth Simian OriginalIty Award was announced in Shanghai, and Professor Wu Chengxue of the Department of Middle Chinese And Literature of Sun Yat-sen University won the Si Mian Original Award for his book "Research on Ancient Chinese Stylistics", and Professor Xie Xiang of the Department of History "Gaoxiang and Low Township: A Study of the Historical Geography of Jiangnan Region in the 11th-16th Centuries" was awarded the Simian Youth Original Award. A total of 7 scholars' works across the country were nominated for the Original Award, the Youth Original Award and the Original Award.

Founded in 2011, the Simian Originality Award was created to commemorate Mr. Lu Simian, a famous modern historian in China, aiming to encourage contemporary humanistic scholars to devote themselves to research, have the courage to innovate, and produce domestic first-class and internationally influential original masterpieces. At present, the Simian Original Award has been included in the important evaluation projects in the humanities and social sciences recognized by the Ministry of Education.

Since its inception, the award has had a strict professional selection process, and the shortlisted results are confirmed after passing the procedures of sea selection nomination, expert recommendation, scholar voting, questionnaire evaluation, peer review and expert final review. The selected results are the first original academic achievements published in the field of humanities since the reform and opening up and have a significant impact.

□ Wu Chengxue

Professor Wu Chengxue has long been committed to the study of "ancient poetry", and the main research areas are "ancient poetry criticism research", "ancient Chinese stylistics" and "ancient stylistic forms". His book "Research on Ancient Chinese Stylistics" was selected into the National Social Science Foundation Achievement Library in 2010 and published by the People's Publishing House in 2011, and has won the first prize of the 7th Ministry of Education Higher Education Outstanding Achievement Award for Scientific Research (Humanities and Social Sciences) (2015) and the 4th Global Chinese Sinology Achievement Award (2020).

Wu Chengxue: Research on Ancient Chinese Stylistics, published by the People's Publishing House in 2011

The jury of the awards believes that "this book represents the highest theoretical level and academic level of today's stylistic research, and makes a brilliant analysis of the key and difficult issues in the study of ancient Chinese stylistics from a new perspective and in a new way, reproducing the development trajectory of ancient Chinese stylistics, and has both theoretical innovation and method innovation." ”

Professor Xie Xiang is mainly engaged in the study of ancient Chinese history, the main research areas are historical geography, Ming and Qing history, social and economic history, and his book "Gaoxiang and Low Township: A Study of the Historical Geography of Jiangnan Region from the 11th to the 16th Century" was published in 2015 by life, reading and xinzhi sanlian bookstore.

Xie Xiang: Gaoxiang and Low Township: A Study of the Historical Geography of Jiangnan Region in the 11th-16th Centuries, published by Life, Reading, and Xinzhi Sanlian Bookstore in 2015

The jury said, "This book is a masterpiece of Jiangnan studies in the field of late historiography. Using the methods of historical geography, the author makes an in-depth and systematic discussion of the complex agricultural water conservancy, market structure and political and regional relations in the area east of Taihu Lake in Jiangnan from the 11th to the 16th centuries... The author expresses the ambition of creative theoretical construction, and puts forward new theoretical concepts in the overall study of regional historical geography and the study of spatio-temporal relations. ”
