However, the actual situation of this battle, that is, the Battle of Guanjia'an, was not so smooth, and the various units of the Eighth Route Army suffered heavy losses.
Beginning on August 20, 1940, in order to disrupt the encirclement and suppression of the Eighth Route Army by the Japanese army, and in order to stimulate the enthusiasm of the Chinese people at that time for resisting the war and contain the japanese army's strength in the north, the headquarters of the Eighth Route Army commanded the Eighth Route Army in all parts of North China, a total of more than 100 regiments, and launched a large-scale attack on the Japanese army, that is, the famous Hundred Regiments War. This unprecedented battle dealt a heavy blow to the Japanese puppet army, and the lines of communication were seriously damaged, but the actions of the Eighth Route Army were also retaliated by the Japanese army.
The Battle of the Hundred Regiments caused Tada Jun, the commander of the North China Front of the Japanese Army at that time, to "make a scandal" one after another, shouting that he wanted to counterattack the Eighth Route Army, and Tada Jun successively mobilized heavy troops to take revenge on the Eighth Route Army. From October 1940 onwards, Tada mobilized tens of thousands of troops to launch a large-scale offensive against the Anti-Japanese base areas behind enemy lines of the Eighth Route Army. The actions of the Japanese army did cause great losses to the Eighth Route Army, many villages became a scorched earth, and Peng Dehuai, deputy commander-in-chief of the Eighth Route Army, was ready to fight one or two major annihilation battles to combat the arrogance of the Japanese army.
In late October, 500 people of the Okazaki Brigade of the Japanese 36th Division mistakenly hit and ran to the Huangyadong Arsenal of the Eighth Route Army, and Peng Dehuai immediately dispatched the 386th Brigade of the 129th Division to surround and annihilate this Japanese unit. The deputy commander-in-chief of the Eighth Route Army was not willing to let this unit go, and immediately ordered the various units of the 129th Division to surround it. Liu Bocheng, Deng Xiaoping commanded the 386th Brigade of the 129th Division, one unit each of the newly organized Tenth Brigade, Chen Geng commanded the 385th Brigade of the 129th Division, the 25th Regiment of the 1st Column, and the 38th Regiment, and Peng Dehuai personally commanded the Mountain Artillery Company of the Artillery Regiment of the Headquarters of the Eighth Route Army to launch an attack on the Japanese army.
Just as the various units of the Eighth Route Army were encircling the Japanese army, the Okazaki brigade occupied Guanjia'an, the hinterland of the Taihang anti-Japanese base area, overnight. After the Okazaki brigade occupied this strategic location, it immediately used the local cave fortifications to dig tunnels, removed the doors and windows of local residents, and built a shelter. On the flat ground at the top of Guanjia'an Mountain, the Japanese also set up machine guns, forming a dense fire point.
The Eighth Route Army Special Regiment led by Ou Zhifu, who took the lead in attacking Guanjia'an, although our army fought bravely, the Japanese army had a topographical advantage, and they also penetrated several rows of caves, and each cave had an organic gun position, which could cover each other and provide fire support to each other. The Japanese also dug many bulletproof trenches, and if the grenades were not thrown in place, it would be difficult to inflict casualties on the Japanese army. There were more than 70 people in one battalion and one company of the 772nd Regiment of the 386th Brigade of the Eighth Route Army, and only three people survived in the end.
Since our army did not have the heavy weapons used to attack the stronghold, the Japanese army also occupied the advantage of firepower and terrain, and the attacking troops suffered heavy losses. More than 20,000 officers and men of the 386Th Brigade, the 385th Brigade, and the Special Service Regiment of the Eighth Route Army Headquarters threw themselves into battle, but the progress has been very slow, and finally because of the large number of Japanese troops coming to reinforcements, our army had to retreat.
In this battle, our army annihilated more than 400 enemy troops and suffered more than 2,000 casualties. Although the casualties of our army were far greater than those of the Japanese army, our army, in the absence of heavy weapons and lack of training, severely damaged the Japanese army, demonstrated to the Japanese army the determination of the Eighth Route Army to defend its territory, and also let the Japanese army know that it was necessary to pay a price for entering the base area controlled by the Eighth Route Army.
