This exhibition is not only Cai Zhizhong's first solo exhibition in Shenzhen, but also the first exhibition of the organizer Ruotong Gallery. This exhibition condenses the works and ideas of Cai Zhizhong's life, under the spiritual temperament of the traditional Chinese literati Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, from comics to ancient classics, from Guoxue to astronomical geography, from artistic creation to philosophy of life, this is the thinking of a cartoonist and a practitioner, and also reflects the artist's reverence and piety for traditional culture.
Cai Zhizhong was born in 1948 in Changhua, Taiwan. He became a professional cartoonist at the age of 15 and has been working tirelessly for more than 50 years. He devoted himself to the study of ancient Chinese cultural texts, and his works pioneered the classic comics of ancient Chinese books. During this period, he created many classic comics, conquered the book market with a number of Chinese classic comics, "Zhuangzi Said", "Lao Tzu Said", "Liezi Said", "Drunken Man", "Skinhead Detective" and other more than 100 works, setting a total sales of more than 50 million copies, passing through dozens of countries and regions in the world, with a reading population of hundreds of millions.
Cai Zhizhong said that in his heart, drawing cartoons is not to make himself a celebrity through it, but to like it from the heart, to draw wisdom and help himself to practice. I have been engaged in comics all my life, in 1985, I was in Japan for four years, the Chinese Sons and Hundred Schools of Painting into comics, the theme of all comics, nothing more than Confucianism, Taoist thought, Zen thought, my paintings in addition to Zhuangzi, Laozi, Confucius, Mencius, I also paint Dharma, Guanyin, Buddha, Luohan and so on, I have carried forward Chinese culture to the world all over my life, and my works have been translated into 26 languages and distributed in 59 countries. I am 73 years old this year, I will always carry forward the wisdom of the East to the world, let Westerners know more about the East culture, until death, one person can choose their best, favorite thing, do it to the extreme, no matter what they do, there is no unsuccessful. ”
Vivid appearance of "Water Margin" one hundred single eight will image
Cai Zhizhong modernly interpreted the classics and presented them in the form of comics, creating a precedent for ancient Chinese comics. Talking about when he began to create the 100 single and eight characters in "Water Margin", Cai Zhizhong told his own love for "Water Margin" spanning decades.
In the first grade of junior high school, Cai Zhizhong saw that Huang Zhizhong, who had hitched a ride with him, was reading a novel, so he curiously turned his head to find out, and Huang said, "I am reading 'Kettle Biography', or the four famous works in China!" Cai Zhizhong felt novel, the kettle still has a legend, is it difficult to "pass on the cup"? "Water Margin" is Cai Zhizhong's first classical masterpiece. When I first read "Water Margin", Cai Zhizhong still had a slight difficulty with Wen Yanwen, but the sense of experience was still very good, thinking that if he had the opportunity to become a cartoonist one day, he must draw "Water Margin".
At the age of 23, his friend Fang Liqing gave him the then very popular "Daxin Tobacco Water Margin 100 Singles and Eight Cigarette Picture Collection" and encouraged him to create more comic characters, this book was released in the 1930s, and it is difficult to collect all the pictures. This made Cai Zhizhong very moved, and at the same time developed a strong interest in the Water Margin characters, in the TV station work after retiring from the army, every day at noon, he did not sleep, but also took time to draw two Q version of the Water Margin characters, during which time he drew 18 Water Margin characters.
In 2016, Cai Zhizhong suddenly arose a thought of re-painting the good man of the Water Margin, first tried to draw a few pictures, and then he couldn't get it, and after half a month of crazy painting day and night, he finally drew the "one hundred singles and eight generals" in "Water Margin". This also has an explanation for liqing's expectations of him in the past 50 years, after which Cai Zhizhong is determined to create more Q-version character dolls, such as "Journey to the West" and "List of Fengshen Gods".
Decades have passed, in his own opinion, at the age of 23, he wrote "more bravely" and without pressure, and now when he writes again, there are many new thoughts, especially the profound understanding of the original work, which makes him more comfortable in expressing the temperament of each protagonist.
In this exhibition, Ruotong Gallery carefully selected 56 of Cai Zhizhong's 100 singles and 8 generals, and covered an entire wall according to the order of the thirty-six days and seventy-two earths.
Cai Zhizhong uses the "Cai Lines" with great oriental charm to vividly and vividly activate the image of one hundred singles and eight generals, "between the similar and the unlike", presenting readers with a new Water Margin hero spectrum. The exhibition also presents Cai Zhizhong's extremely rare large-scale creation, ink painting series. Most of the series are created after 2014, and his ink paintings are simple and Zen-like, with a few strokes but a remote artistic conception, conveying a clear and profound understanding of the wisdom of the ancient sages.
There is a high degree of public acceptance and the scene is highly interactive
Cai Zhizhong said that his greatest achievements in life were not comics and animation, but physics and mathematics. In the past two decades, Cai Zhizhong has devoted himself to physics based on the oriental philosophical view, drawing 140,000 A4-sized paintings and writing 14 million words. At the same time, he is also obsessed with popular subjects such as mathematics and English, and challenges learning theories with vivid cartoons. Numerous of his manuscripts in this regard can be seen at the exhibition site.
At the scene of the Shenzhen exhibition, the corner of Cai Zhizhong's studio was also reproduced. Consisting of a workbench and an Arhat bed, the table is an open computer, five rows of lighters arranged by color, half-smoked popcorn cigarettes, and spread out physical spectral research notes. The Luohan bed, which could be sat or receded, became his simple living room. The exhibition specially reproduced these four square meters, and visitors can leave pen and ink here and leave thoughts.
After watching the exhibition, the audience "Chief Village Woman" had a feeling and sent out: "Growing up watching Cai Zhizhong's cartoons, watching his brilliant pen and flowers, watching him look at the rivers and lakes, watching him look at sentient beings, watching him shave his head and become a Buddha, what a plump and weighty life."
