Winners of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will receive bouquets of hand-knitted velvet threads instead of traditional flowers. The Winter Olympics Bouquet consists of six different velvet flower types, including rose, moon, bell orchid, hydrangea, laurel and olive, symbolizing fraternity, tenacity, happiness, unity, victory and peace. The Winter Paralympic Bouquet also added a blue cosmos, symbolizing strength.

A total of 1251 bouquets of awards were needed for the Winter Olympics. In the northern Chinese city of Tianjin, a team of more than 70 weavers has undertaken the weaving of more than 5,000 moonflowers, hydrangeas and laurel flowers.

A weaver takes at least five hours to make a whole rose. All bouquets will be delivered by January 14, and the organizers have hired weaving societies from many locations for this huge project. These include 30 weavers with disabilities or belonging to vulnerable groups to provide them with job opportunities and increase their income.

This traditional craft (Haipai velvet thread knitting technique combining traditional Oriental knotting techniques with Western knotting techniques – Editor's Note) has a history of about 100 years and was first introduced to China's coastal cities by foreign countries.
