IDC: PC shipments increased for the full year 2021

Demand for PCs has been on the rise since the beginning of 2020. Although the increase has slowed after a period of rapid growth, the PC market as a whole is still in a state of expansion. IDC, a well-known research organization, recently published a report pointing out that the shipment of desktop and notebook computers in 2021 increased by an average of 14.8% year-on-year. Among them, Apple's shipments far exceeded other PC brands, with an increase of 22.1%.

According to the IDC report, the PC industry's total shipments in 2021 were 348.4 million units, up 14.8% compared to the full year of 2020. However, it is worth noting that the shipments of PC in the fourth quarter of 2021 increased by only 1% from the same period of the previous year to 92.653 million units. IDC analysts believe that the slowdown in the growth of the PC market is largely due to the fact that many PC components, such as graphics cards and high-performance SSDs, are still in tight supply.

Tom Mainelli, vice president of IDC's Devices and Consumer Research Group, said:

"The challenging logistics environment coupled with continued supply shortages means that PC shipments could have been higher in 2021. At the end of 2021, there are still many buyers and consumers waiting for their PC orders to ship. As we enter the first half of 2022, we expect supply to continue to be constrained, especially in the business sectors with the strongest demand. ”

However, compared with the data of the fourth quarter of 2020, it can be seen that the increase in shipments in the same period is very small, Lenovo, HP and Acer shipments have declined, relying on the growth of Dell, Apple and Asus to maintain the fourth quarter of shipments in a positive growth state.
