Deeply understand the needs of residents and propose the concept of "sharing the same church"

Wangnan Park is located in Wanggang Village, Jiahe Street, Baiyun District, Guangzhou, the village elders told reporters that the history of Wanggang Village can be traced back to the Song Dynasty, the ancestors of the Li clan migrated from Nanxiong Zhujie Lane to here, settled in Wanggang, has a history of more than 700 years. Wangnan Park is one of the demonstration projects of "Community Affairs And Master Doing" jointly promoted by the Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Planning and Natural Resources in conjunction with the Baiyun District Government, Jiahe Street, Wanggang Village Committee and neighbors to adhere to the "people-centered" development ideology.

In Wanggang Village, the Lai Ancestral Hall, which was built in the light years of the Qing Dynasty, is still well preserved, is a typical Lingnan style ancient building, in front of the ancestral hall is a feng shui pond, which was originally the main activity place for villagers, but the public facilities and spaces in the community are slightly dilapidated, the transportation system is chaotic, the rest space is insufficient, the activity space of different ages is missing, the traditional culture of the local village is lost, and the past history of the village is gradually forgotten.

After the on-site survey, the Municipal Bureau of Planning and Natural Resources listed it as one of the demonstration projects of "Community Affairs and Big Things" in 2020, and on the basis of fully considering the historical characteristics, landscape characteristics and humanistic characteristics of Wangnan Village, invited Sun Hu, one of the top ten young landscape architects in Guangdong Province and a local designer in Guangzhou, to preside over the design.

In order to fully obtain the sense of identity of local residents and improve the sense of belonging of foreign residents, the Municipal Bureau of Planning and Natural Resources, together with baiyun district bureau, Jiahe street office, community villager representatives and designer teams, has carried out site surveys and seminars in Wangnan Park for many times, understanding the different needs of different ages and different educational backgrounds, and digging out the most core and most concerned issues of the community. It is also under the guidance of the concept of "from the people, for the people, and belonging to the people" that Wangnan Park put forward the design concept of "the same church", through the functional reshaping of the venue, cultural excavation and design refinement, to create a human space for rest and interaction, so that different people in the same place live together, as if they are close relatives in the same hall, and they are happy and harmonious. On the basis of respecting the existing pattern of the old village, the original ancient alleys will be connected to form the mainstream line of the internal landscape of the old village, and at the same time, some dangerous houses will be demolished to release a certain public space, creating a unique "pocket park" and forming four main functional spaces, namely: pocket park, leisure space, cultural square and leisure veranda, fitness and play space. Turn the disorderly space into order, so that the history and culture of the ancient village can be inherited, creating a social centripetal space that is close to life, the citizens use affinity, suitable for the old and the young, and a strong sense of social belonging.

The design is full of ingenuity and incorporates traditional cultural elements

After the renovation, the land area of Wangnan Park is about 6,000 square meters, including the ancestral hall square, feng shui pond, open space between buildings and pocket park at the mouth of the village. On the winter morning in Yangcheng, the park is very popular, some people sit around the tree to play chess, some people take their children to watch fish by the pool, some people sit on benches to chat, some people exercise on fitness equipment, and there are "private partners" singing in the pavilion... The residents of the community bid farewell to the crowded public spaces and ushered in spacious squares, safe walkways, and poetic pavilions. Not only can you watch movies in the open air, play under the trees, cool off by the pool, you can also feel the beauty of design and life here, Wangnan Park let people put down their steps, savor and remember nostalgia.

If you look closely, the small Wangnan Park is full of exquisite design. At the entrance of the park, a custom-designed guide sign is designed, and the dark imitation stone aluminum plate is used, and the three-dimensional nameplate with the words "Wangnan Village" is combined with the surrounding public facilities to create a simple and exquisite impression. Here, the façade, paving, and landscape design language of the park's interior are cleverly expanded and extended to form a unified style that attracts pedestrians to the tour.

In the center of the park is a pavilion that incorporates elements of traditional culture. By extracting the calligraphy works of the famous local calligrapher Li Zhanzhi (Puyi's teacher), the calligraphy stroke form is refined and transformed, forming the design elements of the Jingting structure, and implicitly integrating the unique history and culture of the site into the landscape reconstruction, echoing the long historical heritage of the ancient village, and closely linking the long-standing past with today's city life.

Jingting is also designed to provide practical functional spaces full of ingenuity. Children can climb, the elderly can sit idly, and young people can take pictures, providing visual partitions for users to enjoy other scenery of the park, making the park scenery more layered, with mottled tree shadows, looming, and full of life.

The pavilion space and the corridor space are interspersed and connected by an open dislocation partition design, and the two are integrated. Tourists walk in the middle, not only to shelter from the wind and rain, but also to idly look at the looming ancient ancestral hall, see the shadows of the past, and listen to the lively noise. In the afternoon, sunlight shines through the special shapes of the walls, casting tree shadows on the paved floor, creating a sense of quaint and warm atmosphere.

The entrance to the ancestral hall is located on the traditional ceremonial axis, looking at the Jingting Pavilion, which is a unique gathering place for cultural publicity and community activities. The original historical stone slab paving in front of the village ancestral hall has been protected and reused, laid in situ, and the history of Li's migration is engraved on the new stone paving through laser engraving technology, creating cultural activity spaces such as the square in front of the ancestral hall, the small theater under the tree, the greenway, the sports and fitness square, and creating a living atmosphere of life theater, interactive exchange, cultural inheritance and party building publicity.

In addition, on the east side of the original entrance road into the village, there is a substation that is abrupt and obscures the feng shui hall, and the master team proposes to relocate the substation and return the public space to the villagers based on the overall consideration of public space. The Municipal Bureau of Planning and Natural Resources, the Baiyun District Bureau of the Municipal Bureau of Planning and Natural Resources, the Jiahe Street Office, and the Wanggang Village Committee jointly carried out several rounds of consultations with the District Power Supply Bureau, and finally successfully relocated, transforming the space of the original substation into a public space that can be appreciated, considerable and available by the villagers.

People's cities are built by the people and people's cities are the starting point and foothold for doing a good job in urban work. In accordance with the deployment of the 12th Guangzhou Municipal Party Congress on "strengthening the fine quality management of the city", the Municipal Planning and Natural Resources Bureau further carried out the work of community designers throughout the city, promoted the actions of "master doing", "neighborhood doing" and "full-time doing", invited domestic and foreign designers, academician masters, young and middle-aged designers, etc., to go deep into the community streets and alleys, and join hands with local residents to participate in the design of community toilets, substations, fire stations, garbage stations and other projects, and continuously optimize and improve the living environment. In the future, it is expected that more works will appear in the streets and alleys, and the "small incisions" of the community will be used to achieve "great improvement" of urban quality and let "beauty" enter thousands of households.

The designer said that | Sun Hu, chairman and chief designer of Shanshui Bede: using design to retain a period of nostalgia in Wanggang Village

This is my first time to participate in the design of community projects, I feel particularly meaningful, because this is the closest to the design of the daily life of the people, through their own design hope to truly improve their quality of life, so that the people have more happiness, sense of gain.

In my opinion, the three main features of this Wangnan Park project. First of all, respect the original ecology, there are many big trees on the site, we did not cut down a big tree during the renovation process, even if the pavilion has to make concessions for the big tree. In addition, the ecology and greening of feng shui ponds have also been fully preserved. Second, do a good job in cultural inheritance, Wanggang Village is very cultural heritage, calligraphy master Li Zhanzhi is the last emperor Puyi's calligraphy teacher, we will combine the calligraphy background with the pavilion in the design, and interpret the entire design with strokes. In addition, the gallery is decorated with stained glass, which is inspired by the Manchurian window, and when there is sunlight, the corridor will become colorful. I also hope that through these designs, we can better inherit the history and culture and retain a period of nostalgia in the ancient village.

Third, this design is a participatory design, users and designers come together to do the design, fully respect the needs of the villagers, the villagers used to like to play in which area, after the design still retained the original function, but further improved the quality. For example, the villagers proposed that there must be a place to play chess, and there should be more benches around the feng shui pond, so that the villagers have a full area for chatting and communicating, which we have fully respected in the design. In addition, according to the needs of the villagers, we also demolished some garbage stations and substations and increased sports facilities.

Villagers said: Living in Wanggang is getting happier and happier

Aunt Chen, a local resident, said: "I didn't expect to see such a designed park at my doorstep, but now it has become more spacious and there are more places to rest." In the past, the entrance of the ancestral hall was full of cars, it was unsafe to walk, and there was exhaust gas. Now, the appearance of the park has been renewed, and it is especially fun to bring my little grandchildren here every day to play. ”

Li Bo, a local resident, said: "I was born in Wanggang Village and am more than 70 years old this year. We have a long history of Wanggang, the Li Clan Ancestral Hall is magnificent, and the history of Wanggang should indeed be well told to the people in the next area. This park renovation has added the Wanggang Historical and Cultural Corridor, which tells the history of Wanggang Village, the history of the Li Ancestral Hall, and the story of the Black Lion of Wanggang, which I think is very good. ”
