After Retiring from his position as a state leader in June 1981, Hua Guofeng lived at No. 9 Gennan Street, Xihuangcheng, Beijing, and did not leave for the 27 years before his death. This is a small courtyard, quiet and gentle and leisurely, with a strong and regular atmosphere of life.
Hua Guofeng has been interested in growing grapes since 1983, and he has traveled to several vineyards on the outskirts of Beijing to learn from professionals how to grow and raise grapes well. In his own courtyard, Hua Guofeng supported two large grape racks.
In autumn, the grapes changed from green to purple, trembling and majestic hanging from the branches, and the harvest scene in the small courtyard was a scene of harvest, Hua Guofeng and his family picked the grapes together and enjoyed the joy of harvesting after labor. When they could not finish the grapes they picked, they gave them to the warriors to enjoy together.
In his later years, Hua Guofeng suffered from diabetes, and he had to make some trade-offs in his diet, such as grapes, which he hardly ate because the sugar content was too high. After dinner, Hua Guofeng will definitely take a walk in the small courtyard and move his body.
In August 2008, the Olympic Games held in Beijing were about to open, and Hua Guofeng had been waiting for this day for a long time, and he especially wanted to go to the scene to participate in the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.
On August 1, Hua Guofeng, who had just been discharged from the hospital, received a ticket for the opening ceremony from the Olympic Organizing Committee the next day. Hua Guofeng said to the comrades of the organizing committee, "I am old, I will not go, you should go and open." On August 3, Hua Guofeng was sent to the hospital again for rescue, this time, and never left the 421 ward of Beijing Hospital. On August 20, Hua Guofeng died of illness at the age of 87.
Hua Guofeng's wish to participate in the Olympic Games was ultimately not realized, which became his last regret before his death.
