Beijing, January 11 (Xinhua) -- The Ministry of Public Security released the 2021 national motor vehicle and driver data on the 11th. In 2021, the number of motor vehicles in the country will reach 395 million, of which 302 million will be cars; the number of motor vehicle drivers will reach 481 million, of which 444 million will be car drivers. The number of new energy vehicles reached 7.84 million, an increase of 59.25% year-on-year.

In 2021, the number of motor vehicles in the country will be 395 million, an increase of 23.5 million over 2020, an increase of 6.32%. There were 36.74 million newly registered motor vehicles nationwide, an increase of 10.38% year-on-year; 27.5 million newly licensed drivers, an increase of 23.25% year-on-year. In terms of gender, there are 319 million male drivers and 162 million female drivers, with a male-female driver ratio of 1.97:1. In terms of age, 340 million drivers aged 26 to 50, accounting for 70.71%, and 69.66 million drivers aged 51 to 60, accounting for 14.48%.

The number of new energy vehicles reached 7.84 million, accounting for 2.60% of the total number of vehicles, an increase of 2.92 million units over 2020, an increase of 59.25%. Among them, there are 6.4 million pure electric vehicles, accounting for 81.63% of the total number of new energy vehicles. In 2021, there will be 2.95 million newly registered new energy vehicles nationwide, accounting for 11.25% of the total number of newly registered vehicles, an increase of 1.78 million units over the previous year, an increase of 151.61%. In the past five years, the number of newly registered new energy vehicles has increased from 650,000 in 2017 to 2.95 million in 2021, showing a rapid growth trend.

The number of cars in 79 cities across the country exceeded 1 million, an increase of 9 cities year-on-year; 35 cities exceeded 2 million; 20 cities exceeded 3 million vehicles, including more than 5 million in Beijing, Chengdu and Chongqing, more than 4 million in Suzhou, Shanghai, Zhengzhou and Xi'an, and more than 3 million in 13 cities including Wuhan, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Tianjin, Hangzhou, Qingdao, Guangzhou, Ningbo, Foshan, Shijiazhuang, Linyi, Jinan and Changsha.

In 2021, the national public security traffic management department handled a total of 30.48 million motor vehicle transfer registrations. Among them, there were 29.23 million automobile transfer registration businesses, accounting for 95.90%. In the past five years, the ratio of second-hand car transfer registration to new car registration has increased from 0.67 to 1.11, surpassing the number of new car registrations. With the active promotion of policies such as the cancellation of the "relocation restriction" of used cars and the registration of used car off-site transactions, the second-hand car trading market has become increasingly active.

The national online handling of vehicle and driver's license business was 91.5 million times, an increase of 35.17% year-on-year. Among them, 33.85 million exemption signs, accounting for 36.99%, were issued; 23.84 million, accounting for 26.05%, such as replacement driver's licenses and driving licenses; 17.05 million temporary number plates were issued online, accounting for 18.64%; and 16.76 million online full-score examination and education were carried out, accounting for 18.32%.
