Ningbo women
This group of photographs is from an album by Edward Bangs Drew (1843-1924). Dudeville was an American who came to China in 1865. He served as the Tax Department of Fuzhou and Ningbo of China Customs and has served in China for a long time. The photographs were taken during his tenure in China. This group of photographs was taken around 1876.
The small-footed Ningbo woman generously asked Du Dewei to take pictures, which shows that Ningbo's contact with foreigners was commonplace at that time. This woman should be about the same age as the mother of Mr. Lu Xun's generation.
Colonel Watson
Colonel Cook
In the process of suppressing the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, Li Hongzhang hired Western military instructors and purchased Western-style advanced weapons earlier. For example, the Chang'an Army, trained and led by Watson and Cook, suppressed the Taiping Army near Ningbo. The above two photos are Watson and Cook, who are wearing military uniforms with a Chinese style.
Cook trained the Huai Army
In the process of suppression and the Taiping Army, especially after the beginning of the Foreign Affairs Movement, the Qing army gradually became better equipped and purchased the most advanced weapons in Europe, but why later in the Sino-French War and the Sino-Japanese War, although victorious and defeated, the problem of weapons was not the most important, but fundamentally the system.
Foreign instructors and Chinese soldiers
From this photo, you can see that the Chinese soldiers' dress has been modernized, but the facial expression is still slightly sluggish. Modernization is not just a modernization of the military, it should be all-round modernization, and only the guns of the strong ships will not work after all.
Foreigners and Chinese servants
Original caption: "Wadmans and the Drews, temple near Ningpo". It means "Wadman and Drus (Dudwi), in front of the temple near Ningpo". Ningbo was the earliest treaty port, and foreigners settled here early and in large numbers, and it was common for them to hire Chinese servants.
Countryside
Original note: "Rusticating in country, near Ningpo". It means "to the countryside near Ningbo". In this photo, you can see the transportation taken by Europeans and Americans at that time.
Chinese servant
Looking at the faces, these servants seemed to be a family.
