Chu Chuanyu was born in 1919 in Dayangzhuang, Sunlou Township, Linzi District, Zibo City, Shandong Province.

After the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, in accordance with the instructions of the Party Central Committee, a large number of Shandong troops went to the northeast to compete with the Kuomintang for the world, and he successively served as the battalion commander of the third column of the Northeast Field Army, the chief of staff of the regiment, and the deputy regimental commander.

In 1950, Chu Chuanyu served as the commander of the 354th Regiment of the 118th Division of the 40th Army, and was ordered to enter the Korean War, and on October 25, the first shot of the Volunteer Army to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea was fired, and during the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, he successively participated in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th battles, and in 1952, the tactical counterattack operation and the west coast defense, which dealt a fierce blow to the AGGRESSIVE ambitions of the US military in trying to annex Korea and let them stop the 38th Line.
In July 1953, the 40th Army withdrew from Korea, and in October, Chu Chuanyu served as the deputy commander of the 118th Division, and in May 1955, he became the division commander.
In February 1957, he was transferred to the brigade garrison area garrison division commander, and in 1960, he entered the People's Liberation Army Higher Military Academy to study.
After graduating in March 1961, he was transferred to the commander of the 2nd Garrison Division of the Brigade Garrison District, in July 1961 he became the deputy chief of staff of the Brigade Garrison District Headquarters, in September 1963 he was transferred to the 45th Division of the 16th Army, and in 1965 he became the deputy commander of the 16th Army.
At the beginning of 1967, the Cultural Revolution imposed military control over the Daqing Oilfield, and Comrade Chu Chuanyu led the 45th Division of the 16th Army and the 409th Regiment of the 46th Army to the Daqing Oilfield to carry out military control tasks, effectively stopping the armed struggle in the Daqing Oilfield, restoring normal production in the Daqing Oilfield, and successively serving as the director of the Military Control Committee, the secretary of the Party Committee, and the director of the Revolutionary Committee of the Daqing Oilfield.
In November 1969, he was transferred to Inner Mongolia and served as the first deputy commander of the Inner Mongolia Military Region, and served as a member of the Standing Committee of the Autonomous Regional Party Committee, director of the Autonomous Region Public Procuratorial And Legal Military Control Commission, and secretary of the Party Committee.
In December 1972, he was transferred to the commander of the 43rd Army of the Army, and on February 17, 1979, he led the whole army to the Sino-Vietnamese border to participate in the self-defense counterattack against Vietnam, entered Vietnam from Guangxi, penetrated 50 kilometers deep into the hinterland of Vietnam, fought the Vietnamese army one after another, achieved brilliant results, and beneficially maintained the security of China's southwest border.
