Daimler expects the supply of automotive chips to remain tight in 2022

Daimler chief technology officer Markus Schaefer said that the company expects chip supply to continue to be tight throughout 2022, especially in the first half of this year.

According to Reuters, Schaefer said the company does not expect a significant increase in automotive chip production capacity in the first half of this year, almost all year round.

It is understood that Daimler's automobile production in October 2021 fell by 23.9% from the same period last year, and decreased by 21.8% year-on-year in November, reflecting the difficulty of global automakers to obtain enough chips to meet demand, resulting in a decline in production.

Previously, industry insiders also believed that the shortage of automotive chips will continue until 2022, especially the chips produced by 8-inch wafers may not be alleviated until 2025, because most of the capacity of 8-inch fabs in the next few years has been fully booked, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to expand production capacity.
