In the thirty-first year of Hongwu (1398), Zhu Yuanzhang died, and before his death, he issued an edict to the harem 38 concubines to be buried. Originally, Zhang Meiren was also on the list of martyrs, but Zhu Yuanzhang finally exempted Zhang Meiren. So, why was Zhang Meiren spared?

Then she lay down in front of Zhu Yuanzhang's bed and held Zhu Yuanzhang's hand, pretending to coax Zhu Yuanzhang to sleep.
Zhu Yuanzhang was deeply touched by his daughter's innocent face, and he also felt the love that his daughter burst out of his heart at a short time in his life. Most people are almost like this, and at the most emotional time, the person who is with them is particularly important, especially between their own ups and downs. A few days later, Zhu Yuanzhang's life finally came to an end. At the last moment of his life, he deliberately left a will: all the concubines in the inner palace, as well as the palace women who had once slept in the palace, would be given death and martyrdom. Princess Baoqing was young, so she left her mother, Zhang Meiren, to raise her properly. Therefore, it was precisely because of this Baoqing princess that Zhang Meicai was spared from martyrdom, which was really a blessing and a disaster.
