He did not work for two years, and in 1977, he was reassigned to his original unit, the Wuhan Military Region, as the first political commissar. By this time, he had been away from the Wuhan Military Region for 15 years. After 5 years in the Wuhan Military Region, he left office in 1982. Because of his poor health, he died of illness two years later at the age of 70.
