During the Liberation War, General Yang marched south to the north, led his troops to fire the first shot of the Pingjin Campaign, the Siege of Zhangjiakou, and he led the army to annihilate more than 54,000 people in the 11th Corps of the Kuomintang Army.
During the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, General Yang served as the commander of the 20th Corps of the Volunteer Army. General Yang commanded the troops to severely damage the US 7th Division, and in 3 days, it annihilated more than 17,000 enemy troops, creating a record for the highest Japanese annihilation of the enemy on the battlefield of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea.
General Yang was awarded the rank of general in 1955. After that, he successively served as chief of the general staff of the People's Liberation Army, member of the Standing Committee of the Central Military Commission, vice chairman of the Consultative Conference, and held a high position of authority at the rank of vice-state.

General Yang and his wife Zhao Zhizhen had ten children.
