Learn from Guan Gong, practice great fortune, worship Guan Gong, and form a good relationship
Readers familiar with the long classical novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" must know that Guan Yu, a famous general at the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, called himself "Hedong Xieliangren" at the beginning of the story. Xieliang here refers to the town of Xiezhou in today's Yuncheng City, Shanxi Province.

As Guan Yu's hometown, Xiezhou built a grand Guandi Temple after Guan Yu's death. Therefore, the Guandi Temple in Xiezhou, Yuncheng, Shanxi, is not only known as the "ancestor of the World Martial Temple", but also becomes a national key cultural relics protection unit, a national AAAA-level tourist attraction, and an important part of guansheng's hometown declaration as a world cultural heritage.
However, unlike Guan Yu, a martial sage known to almost everyone, the specific pronunciation of Guan Yu's hometown "Xiezhou" has always been controversial.
According to the local media in Shanxi, the Yellow River Morning News and Yuncheng Daily, Yuncheng locals generally read "Xiezhou" as "hai zhou", while outsiders often read it as "xie zhou", the difference is how to pronounce the word "xie" in Xiezhou.
Not only does the general public pronounce Xiezhou as "xie zhou", but even the Xinhua Dictionary published by the Commercial Press does not include the reading of "hai zhou". The Surging News (www.thepaper.cn) reporter inquired into the 10th edition of the Xinhua Dictionary, showing that the word "xie" was included in the dictionary with a total of three pronunciations, namely "xi", "ji" and "ji", while the shanxi place name "Xie County (Prefecture)" was classified under the "xi" note.
In response to this problem, according to the "Yuncheng Daily" report, on May 8 this year, Yuncheng invited experts to make a fixed pronunciation of the "xie" character in Xiezhou. Shang Weifan, vice president of the Chinese Society of Geographical Names and researcher of the China Institute of Geographical Names; Li Lan, member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and researcher of the Institute of Linguistics of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; Wang Yunjia, professor of the Department of Chinese of Peking University; Li Bing, researcher of the Institute of Language and Writing Application of the Ministry of Education; and some experts from Shanxi Province and Yuncheng City attended the discussion meeting. In terms of Yuncheng City, Vice Mayor Chen Zhuqin and Vice Chairman of the Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Zhai Donghong attended the discussion meeting.
At the meeting, experts analyzed and demonstrated the problem of the pronunciation of the word "solution" in Xiezhou from different angles and aspects. Experts believe that Xiezhou's "Xie (hai)" runs through ancient and modern times and has a long history, condensing the remembrance of Guan Gong, the worship and pursuit of the spirit of Guan Gong, and the inheritance and development of the culture of "loyalty, benevolence, courage, honesty and wisdom". The word has been integrated into the daily life of the people of Hedong, infiltrated into the blood, and has become a solid cultural gene. Therefore, it is necessary to complete the work of examining and determining the pronunciation of the character "xie (hai)" as soon as possible, so as to protect this precious geographical name cultural heritage.
The Paper learned from the Shanxi Yuncheng Civil Affairs Bureau's Zoning and Geographical Names Section that at the expert demonstration meeting on May 8, more than 90% of experts believed that from the perspective of toponymy, Xiezhou should be pronounced as Xie (hai) Prefecture.
According to the person in charge of the Zoning and Geographical Names Section of the Yuncheng Civil Affairs Bureau, the Yuncheng side has already declared the examination and pronunciation of Xie (hai) Prefecture to the higher authorities in accordance with the declaration procedures, waiting for the final result of the relevant state departments.
The person in charge of the above-mentioned zoning and geographical names section also mentioned that Xiezhou Guandi Temple had previously cooperated with Taiwanese animation master Cai Zhizhong to shoot the animation film "Wusheng Guangong", but because of the problem of "Xie" character interpretation and dubbing, there was no pronunciation of Xie (hai) in the popular "Modern Chinese Dictionary", and the relevant local institutions had differences with the producer, affecting film production.
The Surging News reporter's inquiry found that in fact, as early as last December, the Yuncheng City Government had summoned responsible persons of the civil affairs, education, and other departments to convene a meeting to promote the motions of the CPPCC to discuss the "Proposal on the People's Government's Proposal on The People's Government Coming Forward to Compile xiezhou entries and xiezi pronunciation hai (four voices) into the modern Chinese dictionary" put forward by Zhai Donghong, a member of the CPPCC National Committee at the first session of the fourth session of the Yuncheng CPPCC Committee.
For the significance of this proposal, according to a report by Yuncheng Daily on December 15 last year, the participants unanimously believed that this proposal represented the urgent desire of 5.27 million Hedong people, and the reduction of the pronunciation of the word "xie" has a broad and far-reaching significance. "It will solve the embarrassing situation encountered by Yuncheng city when publicizing the annotation of pinyin at the Guandi Temple in Xiezhou, and also solve the helplessness of the general public when typing pinyin."
According to the article "Why Should Xiezhou Read "Xie (h ai) Zhou" in the Yellow River Morning Post by Yan Aiwu, a local scholar in Yuncheng, in 2015, Xiezhou was called "Xie Liang", in the eyes of the ancients, Xie Liang City was an eye in the middle of a vast ocean like the sea, surrounded by such a large water as Salt Pond, Wu Surname Lake, And Shushui River, which is the origin of the pronunciation of "XieZhou", "Xie County" and "Xie Chi" as ha i (海) sound.
Yan Aiwu also added in the text: It should be noted that the pronunciation of "xie" was "hai" at the beginning, and later became "hai" in the long-term evolution process, and the tone of the voice changed, and there are currently two pronunciations of "hai" and "hai" in the local area.
On June 2, Shang Weifan, vice president of the China Society of Geographical Names and researcher of the China Institute of Geographical Names, who participated in the meeting on May 8 this year, revealed in an interview with The Paper that he began to pay attention to the naming of Xiezhou as early as 2005, and now because the Guandi Temple of Xiezhou is applying for a world cultural heritage, the naming problem needs to be solved urgently.
Shang Weifan introduced that China has carried out two national work of examining the pronunciation and determination of geographical names, and the principle of examination of pronunciation in both times includes the principle of "name from the master" mentioned by Confucius, that is, things are named after the name of the master.
Shang Weifan revealed that according to this principle, the problem of naming two regions has been solved: one is the Guanzhi (zhai) Mountain in Liancheng County, Fujian Province, and the other is The tang (tan) Chang County in Gansu Province, although the pronunciation of 豸 (豸) and tang (tan) does not exist in modern Chinese reference books, but the two pronunciations have a deep historical and cultural origin with the local area and are widely accepted by the local people, so they are named after them.
"Once Chinese and Chinese characters are combined with one person, one type of person, it is not something that can be bound by the general norms of language and writing. The going and staying of place names and personal names is the blood and root of the relevant places and people, and the cultural heritage that is with their lives. Shang Weifan said.
