"Romance of the Three Kingdoms" is a story that people talk about, especially the heroes in it, and it is repeatedly discussed by posterity. For example, the combat strength between the five tiger generals of the Shu Kingdom is often compared by posterity. Due to Guan Yu's status as a martial saint in later life, everyone thought that the other four tigers could not match it; while Huang Zhong was old and Zhao Yun had a humble personality. Only the remaining combat strength between Ma Chao and Zhang Fei made it difficult for everyone to distinguish.
According to people's general opinion, as the same five tiger generals, Ma Chao and Zhang Fei are similar in strength. For example, Luo Guanzhong created the image of Ma Chao and Zhang Fei in the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", and at the same time, Luo Guanzhong also highlighted that Ma Chao was a descendant of the nobility, a sentence "My family has been a prince for many generations, do you know the village no pifu!" Does this mean that Ma Chao is stronger than Zhang Fei? No. Sun Tzu's Art of War says:
"Therefore there will be five dangers, and they will die, and they may be killed; they will be born, and they will be captured; they will be angry and insulted; they will be incorruptible, and they will be humiliated; they will love the people, and they will be annoyed."
As the commander of the First Army, Ma Chao dared to put himself in the battle line with the heart of death, and even if he was seriously injured, he did not shy away, which was of course a virtue that a good soldier should have, but it was not a virtue that a general or marshal of a game should have. Because he is one of the "five dangers" situation: he will die, but he can also kill. On the other hand, Zhang Fei, when he encountered such a bug as Lü Meng, could not do it, although he was fierce, he still ran away, and he was much more flexible than Ma Chao.
In fact, Zhang Fei's ability to lead the battle was far stronger than That of Ma Chao. Although Zhang Fei is said to be a butcher, he is not really a reckless man. On the contrary, he and Liu Bei experienced the rebellion of the Yellow Turban Army, and the three brothers pulled a little bit of soldiers and horses to fight down, knowing that if they could fight, they could fight, and if they could not fight, they would flee; if they could fight hard, they would fight hard, and if they could not fight hard, they would outwit; and even in the case that they could both fight hard and outwit, Zhang Fei would choose to outwit.
People only saw Zhang Fei shouting at Yangqiao to scare off Cao Cao's tens of thousands of troops, but they did not notice that Zhang Fei also put his 20 knights in the forest behind him, dragging branches around, stirring up smoke and dust in the sky, and intimidating Cao Cao with suspicious soldiers. When Zhang Fei attacked Berkshire, he met yan Yan, a fierce general at the time, and although Zhang Fei defeated him with his own force, he even had a prestige in the folk, not only did not kill Yan Yan, but treated Yan Yan with courtesy, which was too far from Ma Chao's "ten thousand people" who were disliked by others everywhere. This incident shows that Zhang Fei is not only a fierce general, but also a "benevolent general" who can subdue others with benevolence and righteousness.

On the other hand, Ma Chao, he was defeated continuously from one side of the princes, and then he was secretly calculated by others, and finally had to turn too much to Liu Bei, and since then he has hardly been alone, which shows that Liu Bei is also very clear about his commanding ability. From this point of view, even if Ma Chao's personal fighting ability can be compared with Zhang Fei, his command ability is far from being comparable to Zhang Fei. That's why scholars say: The two are not on the same level at all.
