The significance of this war is also very important, and it has safeguarded the security of China's southern Xinjiang, but it is only because it does not shine like the stars of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, so it has led to a small popularity.
Of course, famous generals are not absent, and the most dazzling famous general in the counterattack against Vietnam is General Zhang Wannian!
Born in 1928 in Longkou, Shandong Province, Zhang Wannian grew up at a time when foreign enemies were raging, witnessing the brutality of the Japanese and the hardships of the people, he resolutely joined the Eighth Route Army in 1944 and joined the Party the following year.
Because of his bravery in the army, his position also rose steadily, from a soldier to a platoon leader, and in March 1949, he was also examined by Chairman Mao, Zhu Laozong and other central leaders as a heroic model representative. When the south was liberated, it set an impressive record of more than 20 people capturing more than 1,500 enemy people.
Since then, Zhang Wannian has been working in the army, whether it is combat or military training, he has achieved very good results, in the Vietnam War against the United States, Zhang Wannian also went to observe, so he is still familiar with the terrain and troop situation in Vietnam.
Before the start of the counterattack against Vietnam, Zhang Wannian, then deputy commander of the 43rd Army and commander of the 127th Division, had already sent many scouts to step on the point and collected a lot of first-hand intelligence.
Because of the preparations in advance, the 127th Division's attack was extremely fast, and it took only one day to take the Vietnamese positions in the front of the Zhima area, annihilating more than 1,300 enemy troops. Before the war, the Vietnamese army was clamoring that the horses could hold out for half a year.
Another day followed the capture of the Longtou area, and the Vietnamese army fled, thus opening the gates of Lu Binh, because the 127th Division was too fast to disrupt the pre-war deployment.
General Xu Shiyou, commander of the Eastern Front, had no choice but to send a telegram to Zhang Wannian:
"Given that the frontal forces were still fighting fiercely, the 127th Division suspended the fighting in order to avoid the fleeing Vietnamese troops"

After Receiving the order, Zhang Wannian temporarily stopped advancing and organized a search and suppression of the surrounding areas that had been captured.
After the large troops had completed their combat objectives, the 127th Division continued to be ordered to penetrate, and on February 27, it attacked Lu Binh, which was heavily defended by the Vietnamese army, and successfully took it on the 28th.
After that, he was ordered to forcibly cross the Qiqiao River, and on March 3, he conquered the rear gate of Lang Shan, Mimai Mountain, and together with his brother troops, he took Lang Shan and together with the 55th Army, he caused a situation of advancing into Hanoi.
However, this was already the farthest distance our army had advanced, and after that it began to retreat, and Zhang Wannian had already expected that the Vietnamese army would follow, so he set up an ambush to kill the "Hui Horse Gun" at the 390 Heights, Xiuqing, Ban Hang, 612 Highlands, and the Highlands on the South Side of Kolai, which severely damaged the enemy army and annihilated more than 1,000 enemy personnel successively, so he was also praised by the front point of the military region twice.
Because the Vietnamese army was beaten very painfully, they were hated, and they made a lot of leaflets, the biggest slogan on which was: "Eliminate 127, capture Zhang Wannian alive."
Of course, the reality is the complete opposite.
After returning to China, Zhang Wannian successively served as deputy commander of the Wuhan Military Region, commander of the Guangzhou Military Region, commander of the Jinan Military Region, member of the Central Military Commission, chief of the general staff, and in 1995, he became the vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, in charge of the military work of the whole army.
In terms of ranks, he was awarded the rank of lieutenant general in September 1988 and promoted to the rank of general in May 1993.
