Baidu female scientists talk to Meyer Musk: Women support half the sky of AI talents

On December 29, during the 2021 Baidu AI Developer Conference, developers from Baidu, academia and all walks of life gathered in the sub-forum to discuss the topic of AI talent training. Computer educator Tan Haoqiang and Gao Suixiang, deputy secretary of the Party Committee of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and others delivered keynote speeches. Among them, Meyer Musk said in a dialogue with Wu Hua, chairman of Baidu's technical committee, that women should take on more roles in various fields in the world. In the field of science and technology, women should support AI talents half the sky.

Wu Hua talked to Meyer Musk that women should not be a minority of AI talent

One is an outstanding female scientist in the field of AI who won the National Science and Technology Progress Award. One is a well-known fashion icon who is still active on the international stage at the age of 73. Wu Hua and Meyer Musk are the shining representatives of "her" power in their respective fields.

At the forum, Meyer Musk shared little-known personal growth stories and children's education. A dietitian with a double master's degree, she landed on 4 billboards in New York's Times Square at the age of 69, with all three children excelling in their favorite fields. But behind this, she has experienced running for survival, and even applied for a doctorate when she was unjustly canceled. In Meyer's view, the most important thing in the education of children is the power of example. In response to the age anxiety problem prevalent in the tech Internet company population, Meyer Musk believes that working in the field of scientists, getting old is not a bad thing. Older means wiser and more knowledgeable. Her role model, Meyer's mom, who was still studying computer arts at 94, retired at 96.

In their dialogue, Meyer Musk and Wu Hua agreed that women should play a greater role in the field of artificial intelligence. Meyer believes that "artificial intelligence will make people's lives easier, but more women involved in it can ensure that artificial intelligence is developing in a good direction." Wu Hua also said: "Women account for 42% of Baidu employees. Women can be more confident in AI and beyond. ”

According to UNESCO, women, who make up half of the world's population, account for less than 30 percent of researchers worldwide. In the field of artificial intelligence, almost 90% of researchers are men. Scientific and technological innovation needs to be full of rivers. More and more female AI talents are emerging, which can promote the development of artificial intelligence towards pluralism and equality. At the forum site, Baidu also reiterated its goal of cultivating 5 million AI talents. Wang Haifeng, CTO of Baidu, said: "The higher the popularity of AI in society, the greater the responsibility of Baidu as a leading enterprise in the field of AI. We hope that Baidu AI will help everyone grow into excellent talents and achieve achievements in our intelligent era. ”

There are also "AI coaches" behind the national ball, and AI talents are integrated into thousands of industries

If a worker desires to do a good thing, he must first use it. For AI developers, the composition and technical capabilities of the platform architecture, as well as the support of related development tools, components and services provided, are crucial, which determines the development threshold, cost and resource investment. This is also an important part of Baidu's training in AI talent.

At the forum, Yao Zhenxu, former national table tennis team leader, and Wu Fei, deputy director of the Department of Physical Education and Research of Peking University, shared the research project of artificial intelligence table tennis action recognition cooperated with Baidu Feipao.

Wu Fei said that in the past table tennis training, the data statistics were completed by hand, due to the fast speed of table tennis, strong concealment, and a large number of rounds, manual recording was extremely energy-consuming. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, she and Yao Zhenxu came up with the idea of using artificial intelligence for table tennis big data processing, intelligent analysis, and auxiliary decision-making.

According to Wu Fei, the system uses Baidu Feipao's open-source end-to-end suite PaddleVideo to train the motion recognition model. At present, the system can already identify whether there are 8 major types of actions such as serve, pull, and swing short. Among them, the accuracy rate of the start and end rounds has reached more than 97%, and the action recognition has reached more than 80%.

The perfect cross-border integration of Guoqiu and Chinese AI is not unique. At the forum, Gao Hongzhi, a gansu university student who used Baidu flying oars to develop "desert tree planting robots", and Nishid, a Bangladeshi international student who used Baidu flying oars to identify chicken manure to judge the health of poultry, also shared their experiences from "AI xiaobai" to developers. It is reported that at present, there are more than 1.1 million developers in the AI Studio of the artificial intelligence learning and training community, and the development projects are involved in agriculture, forestry, fisheries, animal husbandry and other industries.

Dig deep into the difficulties of AI talent training and accelerate the integration of production, education and research

Artificial intelligence is a highly applied discipline, many cutting-edge technologies were born in enterprises, and in terms of technology and application, the academic community lags behind the industry. In order to solve practical problems such as insufficient discipline construction and imperfect evaluation standards for adolescent AI basic education, Baidu has also explored various forms such as school-enterprise cooperation to solve the difficulties and pain points of AI talent training. At the forum, Baidu released two important measures in talent training. On the one hand, Baidu and Tsinghua University Press released the "Intelligent Science and Technology" series of textbooks to send a set of teaching materials that integrate production, education and research to colleges and universities. On the other hand, Baidu, together with the Central Electronic Education Center, the Beijing Digital Education Center, the China Software Industry Association and other units, has formulated evaluation standards for the level of artificial intelligence application and innovation ability of young people, and at the same time has written relevant guidance books based on baidu's artificial intelligence open source open platform, realizing the whole path of artificial intelligence basic education from classroom to practice, from interest to professional.

Cultivating AI talents is a matter that requires long-term investment. At the forum, Baidu CTO Wang Haifeng shared a set of Baidu's figures on the cultivation of AI talents: more than 3,000 AI professional teachers from more than 700 colleges and universities, benefiting from the deep learning training held by Baidu; more than 200 colleges and universities jointly opened artificial intelligence courses with Baidu; nearly 100 teachers received support from Baidu Songguo Research Fund to carry out academic research in the field of AI; students from more than 400 colleges and universities have developed nearly 10,000 creative projects based on Baidu AI, involving finance, medical treatment, agriculture, urban management, Transportation and other fields; more than 300,000 students participate in various technical competitions such as the Baidu Star Programming Competition held by Baidu. To promote learning, these players are also shining in all walks of life.
