Look at the 2022 | Mengpu: Chinese manufacturers redefine the market in the 5G era

From December 8 to 10, the Central Economic Work Conference was held, which summarized the economic work in 2021, analyzed the current economic situation, and anchored the direction for the next step of China's economy.

Where are the opportunities and variables for the future of China's economy? How to "stabilize" and "advance", how to "break" and "stand"? Regarding 2022, many answers are waiting to be revealed.

At the end of the year and the beginning of the year, the Beijing News Shell Finance launched "Look 2022", we talked to 16 experts in various fields, around the keywords of the Central Economic Work Conference, talk about their views and judgments on china's economy.

This year's Central Economic Work Conference proposed that infrastructure investment should be carried out moderately ahead of schedule. This expression has once again aroused the expectations of all sectors of society for "new infrastructure".

"This policy guidance will further release the huge value of 5G, promote economic development, and benefit society and people." A few days ago, Meng Zhu, chairman of Qualcomm China, said in an interview with the Beijing News shell financial reporter "Look at 2022". Meng Pointed out that in 2022, it is also necessary to continue to promote the new development of 5G technology, expand 5G applications, and promote China's 5G industry to enter new markets. As the commercial process of 5G continues to accelerate, its empowerment scenarios are constantly extending and expanding. With the rapid development of China's mobile communications industry, Chinese manufacturers are leading the global market in many aspects, and even many product concepts do not exist in other overseas markets, that is, Chinese manufacturers have begun to redefine the market.

There are three important tasks in 2022

Beijing News Shell Finance: What requirements did the Central Economic Work Conference put forward for the development of China's 5G industry?

Meng Pu: As an employee of a technology company, I think this is expected to accelerate China's deployment in key areas of new infrastructure such as 5G, artificial intelligence, and data centers, and will further promote the high-quality development of new infrastructure in all walks of life and support the digital transformation of the economy and society.

The development of the 5G industry depends on the collaboration of policymakers, system integrators, mobile network operators, and various vertical industries. In order to achieve 5G, China continues to promote and guide industrial progress at the policy level. Since the beginning of 5G commercialization in mid-2019, China's 5G industry has achieved very good results, with more than 1.3 million 5G base stations built and opened, and 497 million 5G end users. In 2022, the policy guidance of "moderately advanced infrastructure investment and construction" will further release the huge value of 5G, promote economic development, and benefit society and people.

Beijing News Shell Finance: In 2022, what aspects of development are expected to usher in China's 5G?

Meng Pu: In the new year, there are still three important tasks to be done for the future of 5G:

The first is to continue to promote the new development of 5G technology. Millimeter wave will play a very important role in the development of 5G, providing ultra-large capacity, extreme performance and native low-latency connectivity for dense urban areas, fixed wireless access, enterprise and industrial applications. If next year's Beijing Winter Olympics becomes a demonstration scenario for 5G millimeter wave applications, I believe it can bring you an extraordinary Olympic viewing experience.

The second is to expand new 5G applications. With the further deployment of more 5G networks and terminals, 5G applications will be further expanded in depth and breadth to achieve double breakthroughs. We hope to achieve assistance through technology in different industries, and continue to strengthen and deepen cooperation with ecological partners.

The third is to promote China's 5G industry to enter new markets. The mobile communication industry is global, we can not only be satisfied with the development of domestic development, but must go out, into the overseas mainstream market, into the high-end market. We all hope that through industrial cooperation, the ecosystem will be enlarged and there will be better development in the global market.

Beijing News Shell Finance: What kind of impact will the development of 5G have on China's economy in 2022?

Meng Pu: As the commercial process of 5G continues to accelerate, its empowerment scenarios are constantly extending and expanding. I think the development of 5G and smart terminals next year is more worth looking forward to, and the newly released Snapdragon platform will soon appear in the flagship terminals launched by partners to bring a better mobile experience to consumers.

In the manufacturing sector, 5G will drive the vision towards Industry 4.0, supporting reconfigurable factories to increase productivity and flexibility. 5G enterprise private network, Wi-Fi 6, XR, Internet of Things and other technologies will open up a huge industrial space.

In the automotive space, these technologies will allow our cars to communicate directly with other vehicles, pedestrians, and infrastructure, exchanging information about road and traffic conditions in real time. In order to help realize the future of the car, Qualcomm is building a Snapdragon digital chassis, including digital cockpit, in-vehicle networking, ADAS platform, and vehicle-to-cloud – we will provide more technologies and solutions for cars.

Beijing News Shell Finance: How do you view the development status and prospects of Chinese mobile phone manufacturers in the 5G era?

Meng: In 2010, only one of the world's top ten mobile phone manufacturers was a Chinese manufacturer, and now it has grown rapidly to seven. With the rapid development of China's mobile communications industry, Chinese manufacturers are leading the global market in many aspects, and even many product concepts do not exist in other overseas markets, that is, Chinese manufacturers have begun to redefine the market.

Since Qualcomm launched the "5G Pilot Program" with Chinese partners in 2018, global shipments of China's top five smartphone manufacturers have increased by more than one-third. Shipments in the global market also provide them with more opportunities to better meet the needs of their target customers with innovative technologies, products and applications. Each manufacturer has contributed different kinds of technological innovation, improving the innovation ability of the industry as a whole; on the other hand, this is also very good for consumers, they can experience the products of different manufacturers, and have more choices.

The test of the epidemic has increased the momentum of digital transformation

Beijing News Shell Finance: How to view the opportunities and challenges of digital transformation and upgrading in 2022?

Meng: In the process of digital transformation, there are also some questions about infrastructure and other aspects, such as whether they are reliable and available. However, whether it is Chinese or global operators, wired and wireless networks have withstood various tests under the influence of the global epidemic. Especially China's operators, facing a huge Chinese base, in the case of everyone working remotely, remote online classes, the network to ensure continuous operation, whether it is optical fiber network or mobile network, have supported everyone's demand for distance education, remote office, various business, but also spawned a new scenario of remote wireless applications. These facts have added impetus to accelerate digital transformation.

Looking at the world, open cooperation and mutual benefit and win-win results are the trend of the times. The multinational companies represented by Qualcomm are at the node of domestic and international double circulation, and we look forward to China's further improvement of the level of opening up, fully embrace the global mobile ecosystem, and achieve greater and higher quality development in a higher level of cooperation and opening up.
