As early as October 30, 2010, the State Drug Administration issued a notice: decided to stop the production, sales and use of sibutramine preparations and APIs in China, revoke their approval documents, and the drugs that have been marketed for sale are recalled and destroyed by the production enterprises.

So what exactly is sibutramine? Why is it disabled again?

What is sibutramine?

Sibutramine was first listed in Mexico in 1997 by Abbott.

The domestic drug label makes it clear that sibutramine used to be an indication for obesity treatment in which diet control and exercise cannot reduce and control weight. It is recommended for the treatment of obese patients with a body mass index (BMI = square of body mass/height) should not be less than 30 kg/m, or not less than 27 kg/m and accompanied by other risk factors (eg, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, etc.).

What is the concept of a BMI of not less than 30kg/m?

If a person is 160 cm tall, then the weight should be at least 77 kg (154) kg before sibutramine can be used.

Why is sibutramine banned?

In January 2010, Abbott, which first developed and produced sibutramine, conducted a safety study of sibutramine, which included approximately 10,000 subjects for 6 years, and the results showed that patients using sibutramine experienced an increased risk of serious, nonfatal cardiovascular events.

Patients using sibutramine had a 16% increased risk of developing cardiovascular events, including nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, resuscitable cardiac arrest, cardiovascular death, etc.

The drug administrations of the United States, Canada and Australia have separately released information on abbott pharmaceuticals Ltd.'s voluntary withdrawal of sibutramine. As of October 20, 2010, Abbott cibutramine has suspended or withdrawn from trading in 68 countries around the world.

After the use of sibutramine in China, how about safety?

According to the case report of the National Adverse Drug Reactions Monitoring Center, from January 1, 2004 to January 15, 2010, a total of 298 cases of sibutramine-related adverse reactions were received, and the main adverse reactions were palpitations, constipation, dry mouth, dizziness, insomnia, etc. The main systems involved are the nervous, gastrointestinal, central and peripheral nervous systems.

How to lose weight properly?

Men and women who want to lose weight, remember a sentence: keep your mouth shut and open your legs!

1, eat less or more, two-pronged better.

2, diet, any diet that reduces calorie intake will help to lose weight, and it is expensive to adhere to.

The principle of diet is a low-calorie, low-fat, moderate protein diet, which can increase the proportion of complex sugars rich in crude fiber (such as whole grains, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, etc.), fresh vegetables and fruits in food.

At the same time, avoid eating fried food, mostly using steaming, boiling, stewing cooking methods; avoid drinking sugary drinks.

3. Sports. Walking, dancing, gardening, or sitting with your arms, with an emphasis on burning more calories by increasing activity, and you must stick to it.

4. Short-term dieting or increasing activity can also reduce weight, but the weight will rebound after stopping. If you want to maintain weight loss, you need to permanently improve your habits.

5, it is best to change in small steps, form habits, and then gradually add new changes, one by one to stick to it.

So how do you calculate if you're overweight?

Different tall and short people weigh differently.

There is a commonly used indicator in medicine, the Body Mass Index (BMI), to measure whether a person is overweight.

The calculation formula is BMI = weight÷ height (weight unit: kg; height unit: m), when the BMI is between 18.5-24.0, it is a normal weight, and greater than 24.0 is overweight!

For example, if Xiaohong weighs 55kg and has a height of 1.60m, then BMI= 55÷ 1.60 = 21.48. Between 18.5-24.0, the weight is very normal.

It can also be calculated that Xiaohong's weight to reach the standard of overweight is: 61.5kg (123 kg)!

There are some methods in medicine, such as drugs, bariatric surgery, etc., but only for extremely obese people who have not been able to lose weight through dieting and exercise, and medical methods must also change diet and exercise habits.

Of course, if excessive obesity has even affected health, it is recommended to go to a regular medical institution for medical treatment.

It is not recommended to try weight loss herbs or buy weight loss drugs online, which does not guarantee safety and may even contain harmful ingredients.
