The Soviet-German armored units that had experienced this tank battle were all badly injured. The Red Army's 5th Guards Tank Army had only 50 usable tanks left by August 25. On the same day, the German "Reich" division had only 22 tanks and 22-28 strong artillery guns that could still be used. On August 26, the "Imperial" division had only 27 "Black Panthers" and 7 "Tigers" to move, and the "Black Panther" tank battalion to which it belonged had only 21 "Black Panthers" available by early September, 10 of the remaining 50 were completely lost, and 40 were under repair.

Despite the best efforts of the German armored forces to counterattack, they were unable to prevent the Red Army's 5th Guards Tank Army from cutting off the Kharkiv-Poltava railway on the 22nd. The Germans still controlled the railways and roads from Kharkov to Melefa and Krasnograd to the south, and the Soviets could only use air force to carry out air raids on this line of communication.

On the afternoon of 22 August, the German 8th Army began to retreat from the Kharkov area. At the same time, as German tank units were thrown into a counterattack west of Kharkov, their frontal defenses began to disintegrate under the attack of the Red Army. The 89th Guards Infantry Division and the 107th Infantry Division of the 53rd Army of the Red Army first invaded the western part of Kharkov. The Germans pre-planted 61,000 mines and 320 applied mines and booby traps, leaving behind some rearguards. Fierce fighting was fought all night in Kharkiv.
