Historical Background:

On September 14, 1945, Chen Yinke went to London, England, to treat his eyes, and the diagnosis of blindness in both eyes was a foregone conclusion. In April 1946, he was blind in both eyes, so he resigned as the chief professor of sinology in Oxford, wanting to go to the United States for medical treatment, and then learned from Hu Shi and others that the American doctors did not have good policies, and returned to China together, passing through New York when Zhao Yuanren, Yang Liansheng, Zhou Zhouliang and other old friends and students boarded a boat to visit; at the end of May, he returned to Shanghai in despair and went to Nanjing to live temporarily. Both the poem and the accompanying poem were written during the English period and on the way home.

Appreciation:

In the sentence "dizzy to this eye dizziness", "dizziness" refers to the blurring of things in the eyes, which refers specifically to eye diseases. The whole sentence literally translates to the meaning of blurred eyes seeing things, still seeing things blurry after treatment, feeling spinning and dizzy, in short, the treatment of eye diseases is ineffective.

The "West" in the sentence "Live up to the West to come" has an allusion to Damose's coming, and it is more appropriate to interpret it as London, England, and it is more appropriate to interpret it here. The literal translation is that he has lost the opportunity of Wanlixi to come to London, England to treat his eyes, implying the melancholy after the author's hope to restore his vision, and there is also a glimmer of hope that it is not fate (at this time, the author has a hint of hope to go to the United States to treat the eye disease effectively).

"Du Lao" in the sentence "Du Lao Hua Zhi Misty Shadow" is the title of the Tang Dynasty poet Saint Du Fu by posterity. The whole sentence uses the poetry of "the spring water boat is like sitting in the sky, and the old flowers are like seeing in the fog" in Du Fu's "Little Cold Food Boat", which is literally translated as the same as Du Fu, the flower branches seem to be shadows in the fog, in order to express the feeling that their eyes cannot be restored.

"MiJia paintings are full of clouds and smoke" in the sentence "Mijia" refers to the Northern Song Dynasty calligrapher, painter, calligraphy and painting theorist Mi Fu, who claims to be "writing with letters and pens, mostly covering trees and stones with smoke clouds, which seems to be enough", and the history of painting is called "Mijia Mountain", "Mishi Yunshan", and is known as "Mipai". The whole sentence translates as due to eye disease, the landscape seen is like a landscape painting of Mi Fu, full of clouds and smoke.

In the sentence "What is the debt for the rest of life" the "rest of life" can be interpreted as a residual life, an old age, and a surviving life. What does the whole sentence literally translate to what is owed to the rest of life?

The phrase "Later Generations Know That There Is a Biography" is interpreted as a biography of someone's anecdote, and some people interpret it as a far-fetched biography of Liu Ru, which the author began writing in 1953 and completed in the summer of 1964. The whole sentence answers the question of the previous sentence, and if the later people know each other, they will know the anecdotes of their lives.

The "Xiangshan" in the sentence "Returning to Xiangshan Xinlefu" is the Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi, because of his name Xiangshan resident. "Xinlefu" refers to Bai Juyi and Yuan Shu jointly advocating the Xinlefu Movement, known as "Yuanbai", which refers to his own "Yuanbai Poetry Notes". The literal translation of the whole sentence is that after returning to China, he intends to continue to write the "Yuan Bai Shi Zhi Zhi Manuscript".

In the sentence "Baby girl learns to recite his year", the "baby girl" here refers to her little daughter Chen Meiyan, who was more than nine years old at the time. "Learning to recite" refers to learning poetry and reciting poetry. "Other year" means a future year or time. The purpose of the full sentence answering the previous sentence is directly translated as Chen Meiyan's future study of the Yuanbai Poetry Notes.

The meaning of this poem is simple and clear, the first part tells that he went to London, England to treat eye diseases without effect, its vision is still like Du Fu's flower branches, rice fu landscape paintings, the latter part describes his plans after returning to China, plans to continue to write the "Yuan Bai Poetry Notes Testimony", left for his little daughter Chen Meiyan to study.

The whole poem uses the contrasting method to sink the mourning of blindness into the depths of the music scene, so as to achieve a Jedi where the situation is integrated, so that people can see the benevolent and the wise after reading.

Appendix 1: Bing Shu Spring Tour to England return to the national boat

The 100-foot building ship is cold and cold, and the people are sick and timid.

Traveling far and wide to seek medical advice, it is difficult for the dead to travel.

Cannibalize time and spring, and the dragon groans in the wind and rain at night.

Life is meaningless in the end, and the tears have not dried up.

(Spring 1946.) This poem is recorded from Wu Mi's banknotes, and Tang Yun's "Bibliography of Poems" is not contained. Borrowing the hazy poetry in the Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu's "滟滪" and Li Shangyin's "Untitled", he touched on the vague (hazy) scenery of his own steamship, told the difficulty of ineffective medical treatment of eye diseases, and expressed the thoughts of extreme sorrow in helplessness. )

Appendix 2: Dreams in the Atlantic Boat

Poor and lowly couples are already mourning, and chaos and illness are even more urgent.

The boat is in a bitter sound book break, and the laughter in the dream comes.

Go to the country to imprison the soul and lose loneliness, and pay back the family living expenses arrangements.

The storms of the world, may the lone sail return as soon as possible.

(1946.) Borrowing the poems of the Tang Dynasty poet Yuan Shu and the late Five Dynasties and the early Northern Song Dynasty Xu Xuan, it tells that the British returned to China after treating the eye disease and returning to China, and the homesickness on the Atlantic ship naturally flowed out of the mood of depression. )
