On December 21, Chen Niannian, an expert on nuclear materials and nuclear fuel and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, died of illness in Tianjin.

Chen Niannian was born in Shanghai in 1941, originally from Wuxing County, Zhejiang Province. He graduated from the Department of Engineering Physics of Tsinghua University in 1964. He once served as a researcher of the Institute of Nuclear Industry Physical and Chemical Engineering of CNNC, a director of the Chinese Nuclear Society, and a director and researcher of the Science and Technology Committee of the Institute of Physical and Chemical Engineering of the Nuclear Industry. In 2005, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
