Samsung Electronics said it will provide a global automaker with five advanced memory chips for use in its autonomous driving and infotainment systems.

According to South Korean media Kedglobal, Samsung Electronics said on Thursday that as the auto industry shifts to fully autonomous driving, the company has begun to supply the automaker with five automotive chips, including 256GB PCIe Gen 3 NVMe BGA SSD for infotainment systems, 2GB GDDR6 DRAM and 2GB DDR4 DRAM, and 2GB GDDR6 DRAM and 128GB UFS for autonomous driving systems.

At present, Samsung Electronics is already mass-producing these five chips, but declined to say which automaker it is supplying.

Industry observers say the global automaker could be Tesla, given the unusually high capacity and performance offered by Samsung's car chips.

At the end of September this year, according to a number of industry sources, Samsung will beat TSMC to produce the next-generation autopilot chip HW 4.0 for Tesla, and as early as the fourth quarter of this year, using 7nm technology in the South Korean Hwaseong factory for mass production.

The HW 4.0 is the successor to the HW 3.0 chip currently used in Tesla's vehicles, which is manufactured by Samsung. It is widely expected that the HW 4.0 computer will be installed on the Tesla Cyberruck.
